Sustainability is the development, improvement and practices that meet the needs of future generations, particularly with regard to use and waste of natural resources. Sustainable practices are related with three pillars, where together conform the sustainability. These three pillars are environmental (planet), social (human), and economic (profit). In addition, sustainability explores and develop alternatives that should be used conservatively and judiciously with a view to long-term priorities.

According to the Sustainable Sydney 2030, some of the strategies, actions and planes that can be taken to create an environmental construction, and even more, an environmental country is:
Low-carbon/ save energy; related to improve the rates of energy consumption and emissions.
Water sensitive; reusing and controlling the amount of water in use.
Climate resilient; developing the capacity socio-ecological.
Zero waste; recycling, reuse and reduce the amount of waste that is produce.

These materials have been used as follows, the upper side of the bridge will mainly consist of soft materials and planting. The wood will be used for the pedestrian zones, having benches, weather protection and integrated vertical connections giving a fantastic landscape. (Snohetta, 2013)
On the other hand, Hisingbron Brigde will be using the steel on the underside face of the bridge, where it will be in a dark toned lacquered steel, giving a reflecting surface that will mirror the city, river and the passing boats in a fantastic, exciting and expressive way. Finally, the concrete material will be used to carry out the whole superstructure, where it covers foundations, slabs, bridge piles and some other structures. (Snohetta, 2013)
During the construction of the Hisingsbron Bridge, companies have had high ambitions in terms of environmental work. This intention will contribute to a positive, inspiring and safe experience for the citizens.
