1. Three observable actions that I can take at an individual and personal level that I plan on implementing from now until the last week of classes are: to put myself into situations where I will meet people from other cultures and backgrounds, listen to people tell their stories to better appreciate their experiences, and note differences in the values people hold, and actions they take, in order to better understand my own values, and be open to the possibility that there may be more effective ways of doing things than my own in certain situations. The way I will be able to listen to people tell their stories and better appreciate their experiences, I will attend multicultural events offered by Sonoma State like the Pan y Café event. I feel as though by getting myself out of my comfort zone, and putting myself into situations where my culture is not the dominant culture will increase my understanding and awareness of what other people are going through. I feel as though these opportunities are invaluable because they may provide me with inspiration and ideas on how to be more culturally competent. The way I will be able to note differences in the values people hold, and the actions they take, I will be able to better understand my own values, and be open to the possibility that there may be more effective ways of doing things than my own in certain situations, I will ask people from other cultures about themselves and their values, traditions, and …show more content…
Three actions I can implement on a small group level from now until the last weeks of class are: Increasing awareness of diversity, enhance the respect those in my small groups show toward others, and, to increase the links and networks between groups of people with differing backgrounds. The way I believe I can increase awareness of diversity is by including those topics in conversations I have with my peers. I can also share good multicultural awareness videos with them, or bring them along to multicultural events with me. I know that my friends value what I have to say, and that if I place an interest in something it usually sparks an interest in them as well, and they will in turn tell their other friends, thus spreading awareness of diversity farther than my own words could carry it. I believe I can enhance the respect those in my small groups show toward others is by speaking up when they say things that may be offensive or inconsiderate to people with disabilities or minorities. I don’t have to be confrontational, but at least get them thinking that that what they said is not respectful. I feel it is important to not let the little comments slide. If someone says something, however minor it may be, there is always someone who will feel as though the statement was not minor. The small, minor comments also can cumulate into something worse, like a sexual assault. The way I can increase the links and networks between groups of people with differing backgrounds is by

This will allow students to work together to be racially conscious of those of a different racial background. If I could implement three incentives to promote racial consciousness among students struggling with white racial identity development I would identify any racial barriers that would prevent that student from being racially conscious of others. This can include racial bias, lack of understanding, and stereotyping just to name a few. Secondly, it is important to bring awareness to racial and ethnic issues. Having multicultural group meetings for students to attend will present the opportunity for open discussions and allow students to discuss and express their views of their racial identity.…

As a possible incoming student, who not only desires to, but needs to learn and attend a favorable campus, the things that I can offer and/or bring are my experiences and skills. I will try to help enrich the campus community as much as I can. Although, my experiences and interests may be easily overlooked by some because of the simple fact that I am “only seventeen,” and that everyone is still continuously evolving. I believe I can still bring something to only help enrich the community. A particular experience that I know differentiates from others is, being Hmong.…

In today’s time, most people fail to realize that everyone is not from the same place. We all have different backgrounds that influence the way that we talk, think, and live. I was raised in a rural town in the Mississippi delta called Ruleville. Most people would consider it as the country because it is an extremely small town sounded by open fields. Most of the fields are used for farming and some of the others are just private land.…

I interviewed Abdelaziz Hassan, aka Zezo, who has been the race and social justice LCA for the past two years. During this interview Billie was present. I wanted to begin the interview with a small ice breaker, so I suggested we could state a happy and a crappy thing that we were experiencing. I think this was a good way to warm up the conversation. I learned that the most rewarding thing about being an LCA, for Zezo, was the connections he gained.…

Being raised by first generation immigrants, I have learned to value the dreams, aspirations, culture, religion and perspectives of all people, regardless of their racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. I grew up in a Persian culture and have been taught by my parents to respect and value the wide variety of cultures and beliefs. A major factor in how my parents instilled the idea of respect for others in me was by regularly attending multicultural programs in San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley, California. Participating in cultural and social events at these programs has given me the opportunity to mingle with individuals of different backgrounds who each bring a different perspective to conversations and environment. This literature review will focus on the differences and similarities between free choice marriages in the U.S. and arranged marriages in India. Concepts that will be looked at with greater detail are: how love emerges and marital happiness in India, wellness and satisfaction in both India and the U.S., mate selection among younger generations, and how social institutions affect the decision of arranged marriage among the youth. These two cultures both have very different beliefs and ideas on how marriage works properly. The research being done has the intent to help us become more accepting towards each other’s reasoning on marriage and to provide a better understanding on why each culture choses to accept the marriage traditions in which they participate in. The studies also provides a greater knowledge and benefit…

An understanding of various peoples and cultures is, to me, essential in preventing ethnocentrism from running rampant in our society. My two greatest passions are history and philosophy, which I feel are ideal areas of study for achieving my goal; both have taught me that nothing is certain- everything we hold to be true is purely subjective. Studying these disciplines over the years, as well as many others, such as sociology, which first taught me the concept of cultural relativism, has been critical in both my endeavor to broaden my appreciation for diversity and the development of my own identity and morals. I am eager to participate in classes with narrower curriculums, like a class specifically dedicated to multicultural studies, professors who are passionate about the subjects they teach, and students who have a genuine interest in learning.…

I understand and value all human life, regardless of their background or beliefs. As a future social worker, I should treat each person, client, in a caring and respectful fashion, while being mindful of individual differences, and cultural and ethnic diversity. In becoming cultural competent, I will need to work with various different populations, and as of now, I have limited…
