The accident at Three Mile Island (TMI), reactor two (TMI-2), not only halted the production of more Nuclear power plants in the United States but also taught us the importance of having: Workers with the appropriate knowledge, education, experience, and training with handling of nuclear material, maintenance, and facility operations. A chain of command clearly laid out, with whom needs to be informed, also how to accrue and convey accurate information to ensure safety and continuous operations. The need for protocols to be developed, rehearsed, and practiced, ranging from a minor issue all the way to a full plant nuclear meltdown.

The TMI-2 accident also led to the establishment of the Atlanta-based Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) and its National Academy for Nuclear Training. These two industry organizations have been effective in promoting excellence in the operation of nuclear plants and accrediting their training programs. INPO was formed in 1979. The National Academy for Nuclear Training was established under INPO's auspices in 1985. Also was a clear chain of command laid out. That way everyone knows who to call and in what order, whether it be a maintenance issue, operations, or reporting an incident. Lastly were protocols being in place for everything, rehearsed and tested. Which every nuclear facility every year has not only refined inspections but also drills that are conducted to ensure that their respected staffs are well trained and able to handle an
