This Is Just To Say

In the poem This Is Just To Say by writer William Carlos Williams, the format is succinct and does not relay much information about the true nature of the poem. However, even in short poems, significance can be found, or at least it can be formed. Poetry is a highly subjective sort of writing where what it means will vary person to person. Looking just at the line “the icebox” (Williams) tells a great deal about the setting of the poem as well as why the husband's message is pertinent information. The “icebox” was an invention that caught on in the early twentieth century before the electric refrigerator became a mainstream appliance. The icebox was merely mechanical insulated box that housed both a block of ice and perishable food wished to be kept safe-to-eat longer. Because of this refrigeration method …show more content…
Although the shelf life of fruit and vegetables are slightly extended by refrigeration, it is perfectly fine to store them at room temperature. Williams writes the note to his wife because he figures that she was purposely cooling them. She was cooling them not because the plums needed it, but rather because she preferred them chilled before she consumes them. The chilled plums were clearly a snack that she had intended for herself. She did not consume them right away because the extra little bit of effort to chill them was worth the hassle to her. Williams writes her the notes because after eating them he too must have realized that they were indeed special and not meant for his consumption. Additionally the poem was written in 1934 and the personal home refrigerator was created in 1923 which makes it seem odd that a icebox might still be used. Williams was a doctor, and due to his occupation it seems fair that they should be able to afford the best of appliances and not have to deal with using the hassle of the “icebox” method.

Robert Frost Robert Frost, most famous for such works as “The Road Not Taken” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” inspired the world with his poetry. Because most of the time he was coping with the death of a loved one, a large majority of his poems contemplate the purpose of life and what comes after death, simultaneously reflecting his constant feelings of isolation and grief. Born on March 26, 1874, to William Prescott Frost Jr. and Isabelle Modie Frost, Robert Frost lived in San Francisco for the first eleven years of his life. His mother introduced him to Shakespeare and other similar literature at an early age, instilling in him an early passion for reading and learning.…

Ted uses a lot of imagery in his free verse poem “Depression Glass” by using our five senses: see, touch, taste, feel, and hear. In line one, “It seemed those rose-pink dishes”, seems to be the main focus in this poem while they are used for special occasions, they still have an issue keeping something hot, “the plates like the panes of ice”. He used metaphors twice to compare the rose-pink dishes always being cold as ice and the cups’ inability to keep coffee or other beverages hot, “everyday mug would have kept/a splash hot for the better”. I take this as perhaps a regular mug would have been a better choice, but the hostess realized that it would have just clashed with the rest of the set like an eyesore.…

Poetry is a very beautiful and unique form of literature, but it often is given a bad reputation. The main reason being is people overanalyze it, instead of taking in the beauty of it. Billy Collins’s poem “Introduction of Poetry” explains how people overanalyze and take away from the beauty of a poem. The speaker suggests ways of reading poetry that allow the reader to understand the poem, but not take away from the beauty of it. Billy Collins quotes “I ask them to take a poem / and hold it up to the light / like a color slide” (lines 1-3) meaning take the poem that is being read and analyze it, but do not analyze it to the point you loose sight of the beauty or “colors”.…

Literature Paper Poetry can be very complex and even though it can vary and use different techniques to get the point across it may come to the same conclusion and meaning, and can also be interpreted differently. Poetry is meant to be understood in the reader's own way. Why I Hate Raisins, Hand-Me-Down Halloween, and My Brother at 3AM are about the struggles of living in the reservation, but use different style, syntax and tone. Why I Hate Raisins is a poem about the struggles of not having enough food or not being able to afford food other than what they received. “For the Anniversary of My Death” and “The Nail” are considered as the main turning point in W.S Merwin’s use of stylistic approach to poetry. In almost all of his poems, he virtually uses no punctuation of any kind as his choices of words are simpler. Still present in these poems are the poet’s fascination with death, the spiritual, ruination, and the natural. These poems capture the facets of Merwin’s 1960s style and the use of imagery. They are also presented in stanzas, which are irregular, but given the link between the stanzas, the poems suggest that an inverted sonnet was used by the poet.…

For the poem “This is Just to Say” by William Carlos Williams, scholars and poetic analyzers can not formulate a widely agreed upon meaning for the poem (On ‘This Is Just to Say’). Some say that the poem is an allusion to Adam and Eve, with the plums representing the forbidden fruit and the note representing an apology to God. Others simply say that the poem has no meaning, which creates a strange beauty that makes the poem so special. Some even say that the poem really isn’t a poem at all. When asked about the poem, Williams responded by saying “In the first place, it is metrically absolutely regular……
