“Marines Hymn” is the official hymn of the United States Marine Corps. It is the oldest official song in the United States military. The "Marines' Hymn" is typically sung at the position of attention as a gesture of respect. However, the third verse is also used as a toast during formal events, such as the birthday ball and other ceremonies. Some of the lyrics were popular phrases before the song was written.…
The first interesting quote, “the selfless work of these entertainers… amounting to the astounding total of eighty-eight million” discuss the risky job of entertaining soldiers in order to boost morale, lessen fatigue as well as decrease anxiety. Some of these routines were performed with ear shot of grueling combat. These groups became known as the “singing army” and are interesting due to the fact that these artistes put themselves in harm’s way to help alleviate soldiers. The second interesting ‘quote’ is a string of quotes, “She determined that ragtime… most of the boys are singing with me” in which they discuss how Paula Lind Ayres was able to develop a “treatment” for those affected with shell shock.…
On Sunday, June 21st, I went to see the Dallas Symphony Orchestra perform “The Music of John Williams and Hollywood’s Great Composers” at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco. The concert was held in the church’s worship room at 6:30pm. This was a great place for the DSO to perform because the audience and the orchestra were very close and, in a way, felt more personal. The show included fourteen pieces: “Overture to Captain Blood by Korngold, ‘Tara’ – A Short Poem for Orchestra from Gone with the Wind by Steiner, arr.…
“Can I get a Wolfpack?” someone yells across the field. “Wolfpack!” I yell back with 190 other schoolmates. We repeat this call and response two more times before letting out a fierce cry.…
The aggie band began its roots with Joseph Holick, a campus cobbler, who arranged the Aggie Band in 1894, and after 4 directors and years of work on marching and precision maneuvers the Aggie Band has become an irreplaceable and important aspect of the Texas A&M culture (1). Therefore, it was essential for the band’s informal performance at Rudder Fountain to showcase this important aspect of Aggie culture, and remind everyone they are in the presence of the “Nationally Famous Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band.” The culture of Texas A&M is very different compared to other universities, it is rooted in agricultural and military beginnings, and these military beginning play a huge role in shaping the band’s performance and attire. The Corps of Cadets are regarded as “Keepers of the Spirit” and maintain that record with ensuring traditions and the culture is upheld and taught. Furthermore, the last song played by the aggie band on February 11 was the Aggie War Hymn; however, the most fascinating portion of the performance of the Aggie War Hymn, was that the band members immediately quit playing and joined in arms and legs and sang the hymn.…
On November 10, 1775, the most furious military fighting force in the United States of America was born in a tavern, they are called United States Marines. “Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you” (Adler, 2016). This essay will cover the history of the birthday, how this tradition has evolved over time and why it is an important part of the Marine Corps.…
It is not enough to release Marines on liberty but critical to know enough about them and their family to ensure they are able to make important events in their families’ lives. Demonstrating that genuine care exists for the Marine’s overall well-being allows increased trust inside the workplace and more effort towards mission accomplishment. This simple ideology will reinforce the Marine 's commitment to the mission and to the leader with their blood, sweat, and tears and creates a selfless instead of selfish attitude among the unit. We currently have the most educated force in the history of our Marine Corps. The Marine Corps will risk stunting the growth of quality Marines if the leadership cannot embrace and adapt with the current times and problems.…
When I go college, I do not want to give up my favorite activities, but rather, build upon established interests and create new ones. Honestly, I do not know all of the activities in which I may participate while attending university. This is not because I do not know what I like; I just that I have not been exposed to these things yet. Although my personality is not fully molded, I actively search for novel and fulfilling experiences relating to music, food, and travel.…
Throughout history, war antagonists transformed their concern, empathy, and anger into emotional poetry, visual art, or music. Although war culture typically fell into the pro-war category, the Vietnam War’s musical culture was different from other wars in that its song fell into the anti-war category because of the negative sentiment towards the war that new technology and the media were perpetuating. Rock and Roll eventually became knows as the “weapon of cultural revolution”, as it influenced changed amongst all American, including African Americans, women, and teenagers. Although anti-war music was not the only source that ended the Vietnam War, the political, anti-Vietnam War music did raise spirits and liberate previously suppressed…
This Marching season, the Lee High School band gladly presented, the true meaning of what it was like to be a Gladiator by showing strength, honor, and courage. Throughout the season the band had put in so much time, and effort to get their show together. Vietnam war ‘… Only other vets could understand, ‘bout the long forgotten dockside guarantees, how there were no V-Day heroes in 1973.’ This classic Australia rock anthem, serves as a reminder of what happens when influential people ‘think’ they know what’s best for a generation. The Vietnam War is renown amongst Australians as the most controversial wars in our history. The Vietnam veterans would have expected to be welcomed homelike the veterans of both of the previous world wars, but what they were greeted with, was contempt by the general public.…
The Harrisburg Marching Tigers, in their third year of competitive marching, went in strong with the theme of “Rock, Paper, Scissors”. Starting in July of 2016, the marching band rehearsed eight hours a day for eight days. During rehearsal hours, the band learned and memorized specially composed music written by Tim Stockman and Matt Shervey, along with drill and visuals. When asked what the strongest parts of the marching band are, Jason Groon, the High School band director, says, “I think the biggest strength of our marching band is the desire to get better each rehearsal. That desire is continuously reflected in our scores from not only year to year, but show to show as well.…
Over the last 1.5 years, the 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) has undergone significant change. Following a nine month deployment to Afghanistan, the Brigade appears to be overcome by stress, fatigue, leadership, and ethics issues. While many might categorize these as normal post deployment occurrences, they appear to run much deeper. The events of the previous deployment coupled with the death of the Brigade Commander, Brigade Sergeant Major and a Battalion Commander appear to be the critical events that triggered the downward slide of the Brigade.…
The multiple techniques and performance styles of marching bands have developed over the past decades. The first school with a marching band was the University of Notre Dame in Indiana which took place in the year of 1842. The band formed and presented their skills even before the university’s football team existed, whose first season began in 1887 (“Notre Dame”). Throughout the years, band groups have become more and more competitive. Nowadays, there are several types of marching bands that participate in competitions-- including field, parade, and the Drum Corps International.…
As the national anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner is more than familiar to Americans. Most of the time, we feel a sense of patriotism when the tune rises. Usually, our society confirms that the lyrics of the national anthem promote a sense of praise for our nation. This makes people rarely examine what other messages our national anthem wants to pass to us. However, Jimi Hendrix, the renowned rock guitarist from the late 1960s, interpreted our national anthem in a very different perspective.…
