Nicolette,

You are right, according to Neuman, “critical thinking is a way to think and see things” (pg. 6). It is “being very aware, judging carefully and questioning by not accepting just anything that comes along” (pg. 6). Critical thinking helps us to think beyond the conclusion to the research being conducted. It initiates different points of view on the matter. By this, I mean you are not just looking straight ahead and blocking out everything else, to develop a specific view point. You are looking at the full picture and looking at all the possible outcomes, with consists of different points of view. Thus, this helps your research, so it doesn’t come out narrow minded. You will be looking at the full picture, using critical thinking,

From mathematics to art, I immerse myself in time. A greater understanding of life and mind is the knowledge of a deep thinker, as am I. I tend to overthink situations, but that alone opens opportunities and options that can be analyzed. Everything is connected in life, whether it be from the universe to the mind or from nature to time. In mathematical terms, anything can be analyzed or calculated with numbers.…

Last weekend when my friend Karen created her new instagram account she was childishly relieved to now have a location where she could outsource her selfies. Thankfully, with 15GB memory storage on her phone, she was then blessed with the daunting task of picking the best one out of the 500 pictures of herself taken in an assortment of angles, diverse places of lighting, and various facial expressions. What a disgrace would it have been had I not been present to save her from selecting the selfie where the megapixel next to her smile was a shade darker than the rest and made her look like she didn’t floss! #ratchet! If that picture made the final upload to be viewed to the public, Thomas would definitely not have asked her to the football game that Friday.…

To me, critical thinking is trying to understand and make connections in the material. I am always excited to learn, gain news ideas, and improve upon old ones. In today’s society, I cannot trust what is televised, I have to do my own research on the news. Through all of that research, I develop who I am, what I believe in, and ultimately improve my critical thinking skills. A student has to be invested in their education in order to improve this cognitive skill, and I…

Chapter 6 really gets your attention, right in the begining. I had never heard of the “footbridge dilemma” and I am still at a loss for what I would do in this instance. This question posed, illustrated the two different philosophical approaches. The first is described as the “utilitarian approach” which the authors quote “doing the greatest good for the greatest number of people.” The second is “deontological approach” which is making the decision “based upon adherence to rules and duties.”…

I would like to dedicate my third follow-up post addressing the distinction between thinking/problem-solving and thinking/thinking-critically in a professional, academic, and/or personal circumstance. And the art of providing and receiving feedback. My original week nine post discussed the difference between rudimentary problem-solving of the limbic part of the brain (hippocampus, the amygdala, and the hypothalamus that both humans and animals utilize (“The Brain from Top to Bottom,” n.d.). Corbin (2017) you are correct to point out that when it comes to analysing a situation one does not employ, as Cottrell (2005) argued, high level of critical thinking to all duties being performed.…

Critical thinking Critical thinking, or commonly known as critical reflection, has been widely researched in various professional fields, such as psychology, education, teaching and learning, etc. (Grushka, McLeod, & Reynolds, 2005; Harrison, Lawson, & Wortley, 2005; Pedro, 2005; Willsen & Binker, 1993; Yanchar, Slife, & Warne, 2008). Furthermore, similar to the various theoretical frameworks of self-regulation that have been advocated (Weinstein, 1996), critical thinking has a number of diverse and varied definitions that reflect its complexity (Petress, 2004; Yanchar et al., 2008). For example, Scriven and Paul (cited in Petress, 2004, p. 463) refer to critical thinking as a process and not as an end in itself: "Critical thinking is the…

How do I define Critical Thinking? Critical Thinking is, when you meditate and carefully analyze the consequences of your actions and the possible benefits or satisfaction, as a result of what is believed to be a good decision. Most of the time, when making transcendental decisions in our lives it is required for us to conduct an exhaustive recollection of memories, things and goals accomplished and those that are pending to fulfill; that is critical thinking. I must say that in life we are constantly put to a test. God has given us the privilege of "free will" since birth and when we see ourselves discombobulated and pressured by society, we apply critical thinking.…

Sitting in my first composition class in college was a little intimidating ,I was both nervous and excited when i was asked to write a passage about myself .The reason why i was nervous was because i had never seen myself as a strong writer even though the passage wasn't going to be graded the fact that my teacher was going to read it made me feel anxious. Later on in the week we got our first assignment it was to write a reader's response about a certain passage that we could relate to in a book that we had started reading called “The Norton Field Guide to Writing with Reading” the topic i choose to write about was how to have a open mind, in the chapter it talked about the importance of having an open mind whether it's with talking to people…

There is no way around thought, it occurs every moment people are awake and determines their actions and who they are as individuals. As people are exposed to new and even old ideas, it is important to identify the logic in them. It is important to evaluate the validity of these ideas even if they are personal. Oftentimes people carry bias although they may be unaware of them, may lack information, or be distorted through misinformation ( Eider & Paul, 2007, p.62 ). This type of thinking can be problematic at the least, dangerous at the worst.…
