Chinua Achebe's Things fall apart is a book written by Chinua Achebe on how protagonist Okonkwo a self made man tries to do the best he can to be nothing like his father. By doing this he makes some very irrational choices. Due to his sense of pride and fear of being like his father things really started falling apart.
The setting of Things Fall Apart is eastern Nigeria in the 1800s to 1900s and the beginning of the book is based on Okonkwo, the hero of his village. A very successful man, Okonkwo had three wives and many children and he gains social status based on his bravery and the fact that he beat a professional wrestler named the cat at a very young age as quoted in the book "Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages and even beyond. His fame rested on solid personal achievements. As a young man of eighteen he had brought honor to his village by throwing Amalinze the Cat. Amalinze was the great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten, from Umofia to Mbaino." To his doom, Okonkwo is obsessed with showing no sign of weakness or emotion, a tragic flaw that will most definitely cause him lots and lots of problems.

The only way Okwonko thinks he can achieve that is to work as hard as he can to gain as many titles as he can. It's his social status that made him feel as if he had a right to kill Ikemefuma. It was his social status that got him in jail because all the people of umofia were ready to listen to him at that time. While his social status may not have directly led to misfortunes it sure did contribute. If he didn’t feel like he had a lot of pressure on him to be a hard man I don’t think he would have killed
