In this module we started reading “They Say/I Say “By, Gerald Graff, Cathy Birkenstein, and Russel Durst. Our first two sections were the Introduction: Entering the conversation and “They Say pages 17-51. In the Introduction they start with telling us about the templates used to enter a conversation or civil discourse. Some of the templates used are “Many Americans assume that _______., I agree that _________.” These are great introductions to either a conversation or starting to recap something we have read. These are excellent templates and have helped me in other classes with papers I have written. They have also helped me with the posts that I have to do in classes, especially when responding to posts. In Chapter 1 they discussed more templates it also talks about “what they say.” One example from this is “The standard way of thinking …show more content…
I myself have never used APA formats or citation so this information was extremely valuable to me. I try very hard to make sure I cite everything so that there is never a question of plagiarism. Some of the things I read about I didn’t realize were plagiarism, which is great to know so that I do not make those mistakes at all moving forward.
We also had to take the article used from last week and explain it using the templates from “They say / I say” chapters that we read. I found this slightly difficult to start off as it is not how I would normally explain something. I did find it easier as I went through and started writing, I took a few times but I think I did a good job on it.
The research for our paper was interesting I didn’t know if I would be able to find any information that was of any real use. I found it surprising I found a lot of studies and quite a few that could answer my question well. It was interesting that I didn’t just find things that were all about one side there was information on both sides with

Starting off with the movie that we watched in class “Straight Laced” I thought that was a very interesting movie and something that gave me personally a lot of perspective and sort of opened my eyes a little bit. Because I am from a big city (washington Dc), I am used to being around people who are openly gay or openly transgender. But it really made me think about my high school. My high school was in the city and prided itself on diversity when in reality it was not that diverse. I think that my high school was similar to the movie.…

So Mote It Be So mote it be, like Amen, is a customary term to end a prayer, close a meeting, ending to a spell or ritual, and to simply be in agreeance with someone. The term “so mote it be” dates to 1390 A.D. from the oldest Freemason document, known as Regiuis Poem.…

In “Starting with What Others Are Saying,” the purpose is to explain how to interpret and respond to the writing of other writers. Before learning how to interpret and respond to the author’s work, you must first introduce an idea in their writing. Using the templates provided by the chapter can help you express your own ideas and beliefs. This allows you to state what the writer is saying. Likewise, using the template helps you avoid meaningless statements in your arguments and provides the best way to respond to an argument.…

Have you ever sent a text message and said “omw” instead of saying “on my way”? or do you have a hard time separating how you text and talk versus how you write. these are just some of the many things that people have been arguing about and these are the two essays that I choose to compare. “Does Texting Affect Writing” by Cullington, and “How they really talk’ by Amicucci. In my essay, I will be giving a summary of both essays, along with comparing and contrasting both of these essays since they are dealing with very similar same topic.…

I found that “They Say” and “Her Point Is” are very good example for me to learn how to make sure that bring to light the opposite side of the argument to help the audience understand the response and make it clear for them. And I also notice that my summarizing skills are way off compared to the authors suggestions. He made it very clear on how to make sure to write a good summary of the original text. I have written in depth about the parts that I found important and I also cited from the author’s original text.…

While I have always held a deep respect and reverence for our servicemen and women, I briefly became disenchanted with the Lest We Forget project. I had been thinking more about an interesting project, than a meaningful one. Once I realized that it was more about the commemoration, the honouring of the memories of these men and women, I was able to delve more deeply into it. I remembered that in Grade 10 Canadian History, we had been shown photos and video of the 111th Overseas Battalion of South Waterloo departing from downtown Cambridge, and with that, I decided to switch my focus to my hometown of Preston (Cambridge,) ON.…

Journal 3: Writing Arguments • Definition Arguments Because I am a visual learner and like to see how something is done before I do it, I really liked this chapter; there are lots of visuals, charts, and example essays. I think it was smart to start this section with this chapter because you can start off many of your essays with a definition and it gives different examples of types of definitions to use. The chart for steps to writing a definition argument will be very useful. • Causal Arguments Before this chapter I had never heard of a causal argument. The introduction to this chapter provided a thought provoking topic about the American school system falling behind other nations’ school systems.…

Emily Dickinson is well known for her unusual poems, however during her life she wasn’t famous till after she passed away when her family started to find 1000’s of her poems stuff in tiny spaces all around the house. Dickinson’s writing wasn’t well understood during her time, she had a uniqueness that was ahead of her time; she had an amazing use of symbols, capitalism, themes and tones in her writing which make reading her poems so intriguing. While growing up she wasn’t the average women, she had her own thoughts and beliefs which is something I love about her which brings me to one of my favorite poems by her: “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” I 'm Nobody!…
