The four loves by C.S. Lewis is a Christian book which is one of the famous books written by Lewis among his last books. Lewis looks at the topic of love and describes it using the four Greek words; Affection-storge, Friendship-philia, Romantic Love-eros and Charity-agape. The main thesis of the book is that love ceases to become love when it becomes a god and love is due to this can becomes a demon. Love is a lovely gift from God but sometimes people are willing to serve love as the whole purpose in life (Lewis, 34). This happens especially when people are immersed in love pleasures or obey the voice of love that demands to be worshipped like a god. According to Lewis, the giving of unconditional allegiance that we own to God to human loves makes such kinds of love demons (Lewis, 102). He urges us that we should not head to the voice of Eros love when he speaks like a god. Lewis says that Eros when honored and treated with the same affection we are supposed to give God becomes more like a demon. He asserts that this kind of human love when given too much attention makes us disregard the existence of God. The obsessive preoccupation with the beloved becomes an obstacle to the spiritual life. The danger is not that we love the other too much but the fact that we love the other in an idolatrous manner in an equal or more proportion to the love we are supposed to love God. Eros love can particularly be regarded as a god as when we love someone in terms of Eros love we are willing to stick with them reasoning that we would rather share unhappiness with them than be happy without that person (Lewis, 90). This disregard for happiness makes the Eros love sound like a god but this disregard can lead to evil rather than good. It is the kind of love that has led to murder, suicide and cruel unions. For this reason Lewis emphasis that we must not be obedience to the Eros love when he speaks most like a god (Lewis, 92). Affection love is the most animal of the loves and it’s jealously can be fierce. Its ability of fierce devotion when provoked makes this kind of love terrible when it goes unchecked in case of high devotion. In case of gift love one can give in to the affection loves demands so as to be needed rather than being the proper gift love that works to end the need. Affection love should seek to make the other person independent so that they are no longer in need. An example, parents’ guide their children through life so that they can be independent such
