First, the working alliance refers to the relationship and collaboration between the helper and the client. Goals and objectives are established and mutually agreed upon by both parties. Respect is such a fundamental concept that, like most such concepts, it eludes definition, according to Egan. Therapists should always place the client’s goals and agenda over any personal agendas. That level of respect takes priority. Some ways that the helper can display to the client are as follows: 1. Be competent in your skills. 2. Be committed to the therapy and services provided. 3. Become and advocate and support system for the client. 4. Do not make any assumptions that will jeopardize the alliance. 5. Do not be judgmental and force personal values on the client. 6. Always keep the client’s agenda in focus. The helper’s role is to help the client to explore their self-value and any consequences. This means that the helper will go to the place where the client is at that point and time, and help them to get to where they want to go in their lives, not where the helper wants them to
