In nursing, the expression of caring entails committed engagement, undivided attention, opportunities for questioning all in an attempt to address an individual’s dilemma. Auster and Weiner (2007) reasons, “Caring is a sustained emotional investment in an individual’s well-being, characterized by a desire to take action that will benefit that person”.
Caring is employed universally and is a display of humaneness. It has a significant impact on an individual’s thinking, feeling and overall well-being. It requires connection through relationships and acknowledgement of an individual needs. Therefore, caring is viewed as a distinctive characteristic central to the discipline of nursing. Caring is grounded in nursing’s value of maintaining the dignity and integrity of patients. (Wolf, 2013).

In healthcare, emphasis is often placed on the medical and disease aspect of a situation. As nurses were are fortunate to have a grounded understanding in the concept of caring. As an advanced practice nurse, I will be able to apply several patterns of knowing in combination with theoretical concepts and perspective.
