There are many theories of attribution, however, of the two most influential, I prefer the Jones and Davis (1965) Theory of Correspondent Inference. This theory states that the overt actions displayed by individuals determine their traits or character. This is done by carefully observing the persons behaviour over a period of time. For instance, if there is a co-worker who is always kind, smiling, polite and always gives good advice, we can categorize the trait or this person as agreeableness and say the person is a good character. This will help me in understanding my clients and diagnosing the issues they are challenged with which will guide my practice as to what to or not to do with them as I will be able to predict how they will act in certain occurrences.
