The activity theory says that if you stay active and go out you will be happier. Robert J. Havighurt developed this theory in 1961. This theory helps the elderly replace their lost life roles after retirement, releasing social pressure that the elderly receive. An older adult may not experience a change in identity in response to an obstacle they experience, but instead, their actions have the ability to influence others identity and views. The stronger an identity is, the less likely it will be influenced by obstacles and conflicts because they have often been faced before. Instead of obstacles and conflicts influencing the individual 's identity, they can change the observer 's identity by watching the individual facing the obstacles and conflicts because it shows them a new outlook and…

SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GEROTRANSCENDENCE AND DISENGAGEMENT THEORY SIMILARITIES Wadensten (2003, p. 15) observes that although the disengagement theories and gerotranscendence theory seems to be very different, both theories shared similarities in meta-theoretical framework which indicate that this framework is the common positivist one. It viewed the individual as an object directed by internal and external forces when the researcher is mainly interested in the behavior of the individual. The main similarity between the two theories is that it explains the life of elderly by withdrawing from social roles, activities and relationships. In gerotranscendence theory, Tornstam asserted that disengagement from certain social roles…

Cumming and Henry best stated this phenomenon with the disengagement theory by suggesting that this served to ease the eventual loss of the older adult on the family or community (PAGE 40 SITE). It is said that disengagement occurs after the loss of a spouse and retirement, which in this case may be entirely true. As stated earlier, the individual has retired nine years ago and has been through multiple marriages failing along with the death of her latest husband. As far as social activity goes, she will consistently go to the beauty salon to get her hair done and go for lunch with one of her co-workers on occasion. Moral disengagement is a negative behavior towards others that causes physical, mental and or emotional attacks. People who have moral disengagement justify their actions unconsciously as a kind of self-defense to avoid common blaming for the pursuing of their immoral behavior. I think whether or not it is moral disengagement, it depends on aspects from each person’s view because one side would say it stands to reason in doing justifiable behavior for achieving their goal, other side would say that is immoral behavior. That is why moral disengagement has both positive and negative sides, it depends which viewpoint you are looking at it from.…

Initial Development The development of nursing theories may start in so many ways. A theory may be developed from a conceptual framework based on other disciplines (deductively) or through observation (inductively). When it comes to active aging, the concept was initially inspired by the work of Robert Havighurst on activity theory. According to this theory, elders' well-being relies on them staying active in later life; therefore, staying active is key to successfully ageing (Functionalist, 2017).…

Disassociation means that one is disconnected from something completely, meaning that they are no longer affililiated with the thing that they were involved in. I would maintain being disassociated from my chapter during work week and recruitment by not wearing any apparel that may state what chapter I am affiliated with. I would also eliminate any pictures or social media that I have so potential new members cannot look up anything to find what chapter I may be in. During recruitment, I will also have all the songs memorized by every chapter so I can sing with each one with high energy to show that all of the chapters are a great choice and that it does not matter which one I am in. Hopefully this will allow the potential new members to be…

Moral Disengagement What is Moral Disengagement? Moral disengagement consists of thoughts and behaviors people use to justify their actions. These thoughts and behaviors can be either positive or negative, depending on the situation. According to Sucher and Moore in the Harvard Business School Case Study, “Chris and Alison Weston (A)” (Sucher and Moore 2012), “doctors engage in moral disengagement when treating patients with aggressive or perhaps painful treatments in order to better their lives” – this is considered a positive effect of moral disengagement. On the other end of the spectrum, cults or mass murders engage in moral disengagement in the most negative of ways in the taking of another’s life.…

Both concepts however promote active and healthy aging. Older adults with better social network experience better emotional, mental and physical health; those who guide and nuture the younger generation derive satisfaction and motivation which also enhances the aging process. Both concepts are also useful in understanding grandparenting today as they underline the approaches and styles of grandparenting.
