Theodore Roosevelt was an American politician, writer, naturalist, and soldier. Born in 1858, he became governor of New York in 1899, fought in the Spanish-American war in 1898, and became president after William McKinley died in 1901. He ordered the construction of the Panama Canal, created the forest service and the national park service. He also received the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating the Russo-Japanese War.

However, his career as police superintendent was plagued with controversy and his job brought him quarrels with powerful criminal factions. He resigned after only two years. In 1897, he got a new job as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, appointed by President McKinley, he served in the Spanish-American War in 1898, in the 1st Volunteer Cavalry (also known as the Rough Riders), while still being Assistant Secretary. His bravery and charge up Kettle Hill during the Battle of Santiago made him the biggest national hero to come out of the Spanish-American War. His bravery and hard work won him the seat of New York Governor. Elected in 1898, he was an energetic reformer and worked hard to remove corrupt officials and enacted legislation to regulate the corporations and the free market. But, the Republican Party he worked for didn't like that so they conspired to get rid of him by nominating him for vice president in 1900, because they had assumed his role would be largely ceremonial. Elected with McKinley, he was powerless until McKinley died after being shot and assassinated. He became the Head of State on September 14, 1901, weeks before his 43rd birthday making him the youngest president ever to hold office. He dynamically changed the government and the public image of the office at once. He became a popular public icon and a household name. His refusal to shoot a bear cub on a 1902 hunting trip inspired a toy maker to name the Teddy Bear after him and the teddy bear fad swept the nation. He was re-elected in 1904 as a republican. He gave speeches about the nations role in world politics. He trust-busted many monopolies, and gave speeches on regulating the railroads and cracking down on political corruption.
