“All things truly wicked start from innocence”- Ernest Hemingway. Innocence can be always seen as sweet and pure, but can be a foundation of something horrible and oblivious. In the book, “Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky, Chbosky demonstrates how purity can turn into a monster and can make people unaware of the truth. Charlie and other main characters face this and has reveal their innocence in a peculiar manner. Innocence can be the blindfold of the real world.

In one part of the book, Charlie is talking about how his first girlfriend is good and all, but he feels strange about, especially since he liked Sam. In the text, it says, “But after I said yes, and Mary Elizabeth announced it to the group, I wanted Sam to be jealous. I know it's wrong to want something like that… about it, which was hard”(page 112). Part of the reason Charlie said yes to Mary Elizabeth is to make Sam jealous, which did not work out. This conveys Charlie’s naiveness made him not think through about how to make Sam jealous and to think of something very childlike. Another part of the story where his relationships revealed innocence is Sam confronting Charlie about how he is not a good friend because he was not being honest. In, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”, it says, “‘Charlie, you’re missing the point. The point os that I don't think you would have acted different even if you don't like Mary Elizabeth. It's like can… ‘I was trying to be a friend” I said. ‘But you weren't Charlie. At those times, you weren't being his friend at all. Because you weren't honest with him’”(page 201). When Sam confronts him, he feels uncomfortable and sorry, yet he is still naive, thinking that all the things he did to his friends was right thing to do. Like letting Patrick kiss him.
