Liesel starts off in the story being distrusting and distant from others, but do you blame her? She was a nine-year-old girl who got dropped off at a train station with new parents. Not to mention she’s in a brand new town in Germany with no friends. Later on she becomes welcoming and understanding to the situation. Liesel learns to love her foster parents and her new little world. Max is another character who stands out to me. His resilience to the world astonishes me. Max is a german jew that hides in a closet in Stuggart. His friend brought him false identity papers allowing Max to leave. Liesels foster father, Hans found out that he served in the war with Max’s father. Max’s father died in the war and Hans made a promise he would keep Max safe. So with the fake identity papers Max took them and loaded a train to the Hubbermann residence. That was max’s new hide out. While Max an Liesel spend their new days together they start to connect. They both can relate to each other because they both had to adapt to a new world. Max and Liesel become soul
