Theatre Practicum

As a musical theatre major going into my second year of college. I have only really ever been the performer in productions. I’ve never been to knowledgeable about the aspects of theatre behind the spotlight. But since pursuing theatre in higher education, I am aware of how limited I made myself in my lack of interest of anything not involving performance. Since being at Ouachita, I can say my eagerness to understand every position in theatre is constantly increasing. And not to just be apart of a crew, but to lead and carry out the position to the best of my ability. Being apart of Theatre Practicum is giving me that opportunity. According to the American Association of Community Theatre “Lighting Designer” piece, the most basic function of stage lighting is to make the actors and their environment visible to the audience. But continuing on in the article, it is so much more than that. Lighting reinforces the style of the production, blends the visual element on stage into a unified whole, and evokes the appropriate mood. It is so easy to question how light can cause the change of emotion in an environment, in a show, or even in a person. But when the slightest glimpse of a sunrise or sunset causes the faintest smile or a warming feeling, it’s evident. The movement of light is said to offer a kind of flexible expressiveness that is unmatched by any of the other visual elements of production, as well as color in lighting. The American association of Community Theatre states that direct lighting is used on definite location, illuminating specific areas while indirect lighting is used over the entirety of an area and doesn’t appear to come from a specific location. Direct lighting can cause dramatic shadows over an actor or object bringing to notice its significance. And indirect lighting can range from a faint dim glow to an almost blinding glare across a stage. Learning about the many features of stage lighting through this article gives me the realization of just how important every position is and what every position brings to each production.
