The Theatre department at CHHS is starting work on their first annual fall musical. Auditions were held August 22th-24th. The audition process was divided into three parts. First a singing audition, next a reading audition where the students got to choose a part they would like to perform, and finally callbacks, where the Theatre teacher, Mrs. Rupe, along with the music advisor, Kevin, asked for certain students to go back and read a part chosen by the director. All these stages are necessary to find the perfect fit for each character. In the case of not getting a lead role, there is always the opportunity of being part of the ensemble. The students who don’t have acting parts in the play can be a part of the backstage crews (costume, makeup,

Being a dramaturgical theorist studying gym behavior would give one many interesting subjects and possible things to study. By simply looking at the stereotypes associated with gym culture, you could see them as one huge performance. The best, and most widely known example of this “performance” would be the men from the show Jersey Shore. Ever since Jersey Shore had been popularized I personally, have seen a rise in “gym going.” Going to the gym to these men gives them a sense of prestige and dignity, otherwise known as Face.…

In 2012 I arrive at a place called First Stage at 3:30 in a room filled with over 150 kids. I have to check in at a desk and a lady takes my picture and then gives me 2 forms to fill out. I give them to my mom as I am too jittery to write or even think. I’m auditioning for a play called To The Promised Land, and I’ve fallen in love with it’s script. At this moment there is nothing more that I want them to be cast as the main character named Ruth.…

William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, originally performed in the early 1600’s, definitely deserves it’s recognition as a tragedy. With three brutal murders, witches, and craziness what more could Shakespeare have added, to make this play such a hit. Not only were all the common people in love with another one of Shakespeare’s plays, but Shakespeare wrote Macbeth to impress one certain person, King James. King James of England and Scotland was an avid witch hunter and the author of a book entitled Daemonologie. Taking this information into account it can be seen how Shakespeare relates Macbeth to King James.…

Before the first theatres, playwrights and actors performed in towns, college halls, inn courtyards, and private houses (“The Original Globe”). When the Globe was built, theatres had only been around for roughly five years. Not only was William Shakespeare an amazing playwright, he helped design one of the first theatres! The beautiful Globe Theatre lied on the south of the river Thames (Mabillard). One woman described it as “one of the most elaborate and attractive theatres built.”…

On Monday October 12th at the Orpheum Theatre in Wichita Kansas, our class, 7th and 8th PIB, witnessed some of literatures best be performed on the stage chamber theatre style by Chamber Theatre Productions. In case you are like me and not affiliated with theatre and things of that sort the definition of chamber theatre is: A method of adapting literary works to the stage using a maximal amount of the works original texts and often minimal and suggestive settings (definition provided by Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). The plays consisted of “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart” both by Edgar Allan Poe, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving, “The Monkeys paw” by WW Jacobs, “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant, and finally “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain. There were five actors in total involved in this production, three male and two female. Also in the break between there was an intermission set changes which frankly lasted way too long causing many people in the audience to grow restless.…

Through the lenses of many different communities and individuals in different parts of Africa, Arjun Appadurai’s “–scapes” (ethnoscapes, mediascapes, technoscapes, financescapes, and ideoscapes) manifest themselves in similar/universal and different forms between three films: “Price of Love”, “African Metropolis”, and “A Screaming Man”. Along with these “-scapes”, one of the strongest themes throughout the movies was the conflict or cohesion of Westernization in each culture and how the main character(s) and society chose to balance it with their own cultural identity. For instance, many of the films were in places where the effects of colonialization along with Westernization have taken root and still hold with the integration of a non-native language such as French along with a mixture of French and the native language/ slang. However, in a movie such as “Price of Love”, it was spoken completely in Amharic.…

Theater offers the audience a glimpse into the lives of the people portrayed. Smith does a dramatic interpretation of the different people she has interviewed. By acting out the interviews rather than quoting them in a article or taking a video and risk compromising anonymity, she is able to connect with the audience better. Smith also uses a technique that implements video alongside spoken performance to get her point across. In this case, it is very successful because the snippets of video used build on the narrative of the people being interviewed.…

Although the term Homosexual was not coined until the late 19th century that did not mean that homosexuals were not present in society or that the ideas of homosexuality were not being represented and debated upon within literature and theater prior to that. Homosexuality and queer theory have always had a standing amongst the performing arts, however, people's views towards them have shifted from acceptance to rejection and back again many times throughout history. With the reformation of the London theater during the Restoration era and the change from boys playing women's roles to women playing themselves on stage along with the emergence of the Fop character, the perceptions of the male actor and homosexuality began to shift in a more negative…

Out of the seven shows I’ve been in I was and actor in three and tech for four. Having taken part in both acting and tech over the years, I can easily work with actors well but also understand what tech is doing and work together to create the best show possible, giving me a perspective different than that of previous directors. As for theatre classes, I’m currently in my second semester of acting and will be taking it again next year. Before moving here last winter, I was in a general theatre class at my previous school. The advantage of that class was that we were able to learn everything: history, acting, scenic design, writing, lighting, costuming, and so much more.…

While I realize that was only six months ago or so, it’s difficult to remember the expectations I had going into the semester. Theater Delta seemed to be the perfect mixture of my interests – dramatic arts and social justice. In just four months, I worked in almost every capacity the organization has – researcher, data analyst, script developer, videographer, etc. The list goes on and on, and all of those responsibilities taught me a great deal when it comes to working on the logistical side of a non-profit.…

Inverness is a city situated in the north east of Scotland, on the edge of the Highlands and is considered the only administrative centre for the theatrical arts. The first theatre to be built in the city was completed in 1805; however, it burnt down during the war. Later in the 1960’s Inverness was housing a population of around 30,000 but the council expected this figure to increase due to new city developments. In the early 1960’s the city council decided to develop and expand the Inverness riverbank into a commercial area.…

It does make me happy when my fellow actors and actresses do not miss a line and hit every cue, so I could imagine that that as a director is that much more exciting. Also, to know what it took to put the whole production together and to see it seem flawless and without difficulty to the audience would be relieving after knowing that I wanted to pull all of my hair out of my head with how frustrated I know I would be unpacking the entire play. The director is with the play before the majority of the ensemble, therefore being the director, I would get to see my vision unfold before my eyes with what could have taken several months to gather together. With great communication skills and the ability to work under pressure comes a great director, and I believe I would excel at…
