Running Head: Economically Oppressed: How the Wage Gap is Effecting Men and Women. Gender issues affect all areas of life for men and women. One of the areas greatly affected is the area of economics and the work force. The wage gap between men and women continues, in part, due to the stereotypes the follow the working women in America. Society has taught, through gender socialization, that women in the workforce are not going to be as successful as men, competent as men, or focused as men. It has taught the community that the woman's place is in the home and with the children. When women are going to try to find a job they are facing stereotypes like being “expected to have good soft skills”and being “weaker than their male coworkers”.( Feloni,2014) This hurts them in their careers because it leaves them vulnerable to getting placed with “ ‘irrelevant tasks’ ” that gives them less of a “ ‘ chance to improve relevant skills’ ” (Feloni, 2014) These types of stereotypes make many women unable to live up to, and produce, their full potential of work. Some stereotypes even affect the working women in such a way that she could not even be seen as a candidate for the job she wishes to be hired for. Some employers seem to think that women are not even worth hiring due to the fact that since they are women “they are expected to have kids and quit their [jobs]” (Feloni, 2014) after this fact. Some ways that we can help decrease the gap in pay between men and women is through getting rid of the secrecy around paychecks and provide quality and affordable child care. The First step that can be made is taking away the secrecy behind what everyone is making in a specific job. If “women are not able to discuss their salaries with their colleagues, they often cannot tell when they are making less than their male colleagues for doing the same job.” (Baxter,E; Fisher, M;
