'A Critical Analysis Of Revive'

Improved Essays
“Revive” is a work specifically about a husband and wife who are having relationship problems and are trying to repair their broken relationship. Likewise, the meaning of the dance could be more general and be taken to be about failed romantic relationships and the trials and tribulations that those people in the relationship go through to try and amend what is broken. One can tell that the piece has a romantic connotation because the dancers sensually touch each other and are constantly looking at one another throughout the dance. Likewise, it is easy to tell that the dancers have a failed relationship that they are trying to repair because, throughout the piece, the dancers dance literally together and close to each other. The dancers proceeded to do a fierce chair section where the female is dancing on and about the black chair while the male sensually looks her up and down. At first, the female is laying across the chair, but at some point makes her way to standing firm and strong on top of the chair so that she can look down at the male dancer. At this point, the male intensely stares at her like he is in love but she really isn’t looking at him super directly yet. She is just glancing down at him. At the same time though, the male runs his hands down the standing females’ body and she does a wiggle down with her hips. The female also does some leg swings and kicks. As a whole, the dancers’ movements are stiff but flowy at the same time. After a few seconds of doing chair work, the dancers depart from the chair and physically stop dancing so close to one another but they remain near each other in the space. The dancers continue to dance separately until they come back together for a lift where she’s in an x position behind his head and somehow comes over him to be able to slide down his leg and let her arm graze his leg as she comes down. The chair part and the big lift serves as a way to let the audience know that the dancers are slowly working on their relationship issues and are coming together as one

The screen goes black. The music has stopped. A slow tapping sound like an ice pick on a window alternates with the sound of footsteps, as a white stage and the legs of a performer come into view. One leg is bare, a conventionally sexy woman’s leg ending in a towering heel-less shoe. The other is less expected: rather than flesh and bone, there is a sleek black blade, a dark stalactite beginning at the knee and ending in a dangerous point.…

I will start this by being brutally honest, I tend to indulge myself in things others would refer to as “mushy crap”; ice cream, boy bands, badly written romance novels, all things I enjoy, along with Waitress. The musical based closely off of a 2007 film of the same name, opened on Broadway in April of 2016 and has been experiencing a successful run so far, with a tour scheduled for 2017. I had the pleasure of seeing Waitress this summer, in early July and, admittedly, shed a tear or two, or twenty. The journey to Broadway began with a workshop in 2014.…

The room itself was grand and ancient, with walls of rough hewn stone, polished granite floors, and a ceiling as high as ten men. There were eight long tables, the shortest on a raised dais along the far wall, and seven more set orthogonal to the first and extending to the entry. Sheaves of wheat and sprays of spring blooms adorned the walls, and cornucopias spilled fruits, nuts and candies onto each table. There were dancers, at least a dozen of them, draped loosely in silks of gold and rich green, ribbons of fabric that swayed as they swayed, dipped as they dipped, and fluttered about them as they spun. Along walls and in corners, on tables and among revelers, they danced in time to a rhythmic tune—singly and in pairs and trios, all moving with an agile grace, seducing guests with limber acrobatics and inviting smiles.…

In the dance piece called “Equilibrium” choreographed by Aly Homen, when the dancers were laying down and slowly raising up when a female character started grabbing it created a really powerful impact to the audiences who were watching. During that time, her facial expression was showing that she was afraid and her movements seemed really weak but what was motivational was when she was in her despair, many people around started helping her out. The performers started covering each other eyes and slowly walked each other toward the audiences. The experience of watching the movements was sad and relief at the same time mainly because it was hard to see someone suffered and acted like she was crazy but in the end there were many people came out…

Martha Graham’s “Lamentation,” like many of her other works, is a direct expression of emotion; an expression of emotion through body movements. Graham was known as the “Mother of Modern Dance” and for her technique “contraction and release.” She also focused on the stability and strength of the body and keeping its control. This technique was in efforts to develop and maintain flexibility in the spine and hips, specifically in a seated position. “Lamentation” was created in response to the grief, sorrow and anger during the Great Depression.…

Space- The use of space in the video perfectly portrays the women desire to move on from their expected role as dancers to other career opportunities. Their dance movement shows a lot of traveling upstage and downstage as well as angular and circular patterns, representing their power and confidence. There was numerous of what one would call a “high” level movement such as skipping and knee raising to illustrate the women jolly mood in anticipation for a better future. Their powerful, darting arms and bent knees convey a message of running away from their current situation in order to catch their dreams.…

It is clear that the story is about two lovers but the details surrounding that fact are somewhat hazy. It is possible that the lovers were somehow separated and are finding their way back to each other. Or that they were never together but noticed each other from afar and desire is pulling them towards each other. The first case is better supported given the fact that both dancer started on stage dancing together.
