“When your values are clear to you, making decisions become easier”- Roy Disney. Walter Dean Myers short story, “The treasure of Lemon Brown”, explores the values of Greg Ridley, a fourteen year old boy who wants to play basketball, but can’t play because of his low grade in math. On the other hand, in John Steinbeck’s novel, The Pearl , an uneducated man named Kino found a great pearl that corrupted his values with greed and destroyed his family. In both “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” and The Pearl, the main characters experience conflicts that change their values of what is important in life.

“ And Kino drew back his arm and flung the pearl with all his might.Kino and Juana watched it go, winking in the setting sun.” This shows that Kino didn’t care about the pearl anymore, but his family, This is important because, it shows that he’s willing to throw his wealth away for his family. To sum it all up, Kino’s conflict was resolved in a ruthless way, but now he realizes family should come before anything, especially materialistic things.

Both Kino ad Greg fail to value their families in the beginning of their stories. In “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” and The Pearl, the main characters go through conflicts within their family that makes them recognize the important things in life. Greg’s conflict is resolved when he talks to Lemon Brown about his son, so he begins to realize that his father only wants the best for him. On the other hand, unfortunately Greg’s conflict is resolved when Coyotito gets killed.
