1.3 Journal Assess Your Competence My basic understanding of the social work history is not lacking and I feel that is not an issue and learning about the five helping stages and problem-solving skills allows me to understand how to be a successful social worker. The five stages include “engagement, intake and assessment, planning and contracting, treatment and intervention, and evaluation and termination” (Cummins, Sevel, & Pedrick, 2012, p.5). In addition, having a clear understanding of these stages is necessary so a social worker can help clients and be competent in practice. I believe that I can consistently identify the understanding of the three stages of social work practice and the social worker roles at each level of practice, however, saying that I can competently can do these things at this stage is not possible, until I am actively using these skills in the field and really doing
