Public health is the establishment and maintenance of healthful living conditions for the general population. This goal requires organized effort from all levels of government, health institutions and individuals. There are three principle aims that underlie public health efforts. First is the assessment and monitoring of populations, from the community level to the national level, to identify populations who are at risk for whatever health problem is being considered by public health. An important priority of control of infectious disease is to ensure that scientific and technological advances in molecular diagnostics and bioinformatics are well integrated into public health. Broad and diverse partnerships across governments, health care, academia, and industry, and with the public, are essential to effectively reduce the burden of infectious diseases in food as well.
