The Thick Smog In London In The Late 19th Century

People, animals, and even traffic by car, rail, and air came to an abrupt halt as this smog settled on London. Thousands of people and animals were affected by this deadly substance. the smog was thick enough that no one dared go outside. the weather had gotten so bad that even airplanes were grounded for the four days the fog was there. Giant amounts of chemicals that were released into the air from coal burning houses to giant factories and visibility had gone down all the way to barely a foot out, some people reported to not even seeing their own two feet. People across London were being affected by the thick smog. This even happened on december 5-9 1952. This event took place In London, Britain. The smog was caused by thousands of people burning coal to keep warm and the giant factory chimneys. all of the toxic emissions were kept down by stagnant air and the warm wet …show more content…
The people who were killed in this smog had pre-existing respiratory problems or they were elderly. The smog slowly covered the entirety of London and got thicker with each day of the 4 days it was there. The smog asphyxiated hundreds of animals and thousands of cattle died by the smog. 12,000 people in total died because of the effects of the smog. the ecosystem did not suffer at all thanks to the already growing pollution problem and the fact that it is always foggy at London. The plants already were used to the large amount of fog in London. The native plants were not affected of any kind.The smog killed over 4000 animals in just one farm alone. People and animals were affected by the huge amounts of toxic material in the air, the plants have already died because of the cold weather and because of it being in the middle of winter the plants were not affected enough by the smog for it to last before they were growing in the
