Success, like most things, is the result of hard work and dedication. In Hope Jahren’s memoir Lab Girl, Jahren aims for scientific success through work and commitment. Studying plants alongside her lab partner Bill Hagopian, acclaimed geobiologist and geochemist Hope Jahren is known for her work in analysing fossil forests. Due to hard work and dedication, Jahren has received three Fulbright awards, a Donath medal, and the Macelwane Medal. In Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, my understanding of the drive to succeed is confirmed through Jahren’s perseverance …show more content…
For example, while studying plants surrounded by poison ivy, Jahren and her team had not been getting successful results. They “had done the field trip three times already, and [Jahren’s] allergic reaction to the rampant poison ivy had gotten worse each time” (Jahren 148). In fact, her reaction to the ivy became so severe that she could barely see out of one eye and had to go to the emergency room. Despite her allergy, Hope Jahren still went out and completed the lab not once, but three times, to get data. She was willing to suffer through painful rashes and did not care about her own health as much as a successful study. Not only did Jahren put her health at risk when she repeated a lab many times, but also when she drove thousands of miles for a meeting. To get to a conference in San Francisco from Georgia, Jahren and her team drove for miles for “three … very long days” in the cold of December (151). This is not an easy task. It requires hours and hours of tiresome driving and patience and can really affect both your mental and physical health. Despite the tedious and mentally-tolling journey, Jahren was determined to get to California for the meeting. She did not ever consider the option to forgo the conference. Due to Hope Jahren’s persistence in her work, even when her health is in jeopardy, the idea of being driven to succeed is …show more content…
Jahren and her team had been studying plants which were surrounded by poison ivy along the Mississippi River. Not getting successful results, they “had done the field trip three times already, and [Jahren’s] allergic reaction to the rampant poison ivy had gotten worse each time” (Jahren 148). In fact, her reaction to the ivy became so severe that she could barely see out of one eye and had to go to the emergency room. Despite her allergy to poison ivy, Hope Jahren still went out and completed the lab not once, but three times, to get data. She did not care about her own health as much as a successful study and results. “... the horrible itching I felt was nothing compared with the discomfort … I felt [with] each dataset” (149). Extremely driven to get successful results, Jahren willing to suffer through painful rashes just to obtain them. Hope Jahren’s need for an effective lab in spite of her health clearly demonstrates the idea of the drive for triumph and
