After Image was supposed to bring out imagery of the files arctic expedition made by S.A. Andrée in1897. The only part of the dance that I was able to recognize was the paper being torn and placed over the dancers, like ice breaking up. I couldn’t really pick out any of the other movements as specifically representing the expedition.
At first the movement in After Image was confusing and I wasn’t quite sure what was supposed to be happening. A few minutes in I realized the cause and effect that was taking place between the dancers. When I understood the piece I felt a sense of relief, but before I had moments of panic because I couldn’t figure out what was going on.
After Image experimented with movement, drawing, and making choices. First of all, having to keep a drawing utensil on

The music was soft and not really memorable. I am not sure if it was supposed to be important or not because I feel that the focus of the piece was on the drawing and movement.
The stage was very simple with paper covering the floor and six chairs, one for each dancer. Fro the moment the dancers entered the stage to when the piece was over the lighting was very dim, but was enough to show the clash between the white paper/ costumes and the charcoal. The charcoal pieces were a good size, easy to use and hold while dancing, but not small enough to break. The dancers wore simple make-up, so that they could bring out their features while staying in a natural state. It fascinates me how the dancers can create while having to keep their hand on the page. That kind of movement in itself is original, but to create a piece that involves improv and slight structural changes every night gives quite a unique performance. One particular moment I like was when they lifted the charcoal off the page and drew on

Jazz History Concert Report II For my final concert writing critique, I decided to attend the live Ball State Student Jazz Combos on Tuesday, November 8; this event took place in Choral Hall inside of the university’s Music Instruction Building. The wooden hall was smaller than I thought it would have been, but it gave the concert setting a more intimate feel. There were three groups presenting that day, each under a different director. Because each group did not have a specific name, I had to label them based on the order in which they performed.…

The costuming is gorgeous and helps you to see the distinctive characters throughout the performance. The costumes are beautiful and fits Parisian style, setting, and time-period of the story. The scenery helps the audience to envision that they are actually seeing the streets of Paris prior to the French Revolution. Both performances have similarities but also have very distinct contrasts. Both dances rely heavily on arm, leg, shoulder, and head movements.…

As the curtains went up, the audience was present with a metal structure that was the bottom of the Eiffel tower. This beautiful metal structure made me only excited to see what the rest of the sets would look like. The lighting right off the bat was extremely elegant, being that the majority of the lights had a shade of purple. This set the feel of the Parisian world that the audience would be taken on. Before I saw the show, I imagined the stage being much bigger than it actually was in reality.…

On Friday, July 10th, the local instrumental jazz group Yuma Jazz Company played at Lutes Casino for a couple of hours. The instrumentation was fairly standard for a jazz group, with trumpet, saxophone, guitar, double bass, and drums (I believe those were electric). The guitar and bass, along with the drums, served as a sort of basso continuo, generally backing the horns, but occasionally taking up the melody for themselves, resulting in a texture that was thinly polyphonic. Also noticeable was the “fabulous light up tip jar,” a colorful accompaniment to their music. The concert ran from 7 to 9 PM, so I went in not only with the intention of listening to the group but also with a good meal in mind.…

On May 10th, I had the opportunity to the “The Stony Brook Roots Ensemble. This was my first experience witnessing traditional American music played live. The venue and the ambiance were completely different from my time at the orchestra at the Staller Center. The performance took place in the Wang Center Chapel, which had surprisingly great acoustics than expected. At the orchestra there was very strict etiquette when in attendance, where one must be incredibly quiet in order to not disturb anyone else.…

I attended a jazz concert that featured Jazz Spirituals songs. The concert took place at Dizzy's – where the music matters the most; and just as promised by the name of the venue, the atmosphere was mainly focused on the music. The band was placed on the middle front of the venue and the audience took a sit at a really close distance from them; allowing us to really enjoy and feel the music. The show was arranged by the pianist of the band, Richard Thompson. The band also consisted of Derek Cannon on the trumpet, Tim Nunnink on the tenor saxophone, Mack Leighton on the bass, Charlie Weller on the drums, and Leonard Patton on vocals.…

When the lights went off, all you saw was a green light glowing on the stage and I thought that was a very cool and creative factor to use because it gave a sense of alarm or danger to the play. Before the play began, you were able to hear old music from the 20’s which I believe really set a good mood for this play. I believe music set a mood to the audience and gave them the feeling that everything was going to be okay and that this story was going to end on a happy note. It also gives a tone to the audience without saying anything that the play is set in a past era. The props, such as the walking cane and rocking chair, gave a very good identification of how the characters were physically feeling as the play progressed.…

Moreover, since it was a solo performance, there was no communication among performers. Even though I could not see the performer because he was hide behind the organ, I could feel that I was putting a lot of energy in this piece to make it dramtic. Just by the way he would hit the peddles it resound in the Hall. The musical composition I liked the least was Prélude et fugue en mi mineur composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.…

That's a main theme of the play, unsettling and unnatural. Almost all aspects of the play hit on this theme in someway. All of the dancing in Rite of Spring is sporadic or startling; the movements almost alien in the way they twist and turn, contorting in sometimes gruesum fashions. The music follows this unsettling pattern with unnatural tempos, sudden crescendos, and other distinctive at times disturbing music design, all played by a talented ensemble equipped with an ghostly cast of instruments. It's all very curious, and will captivate most people just with a glance.…

When I first started listening to this piece, Haydn’s String Quartet in D Major, Op. 64, “The Lark,” I was surprised by how familiar it sounded to me. I think it is well known, and has a distinct section that repeats multiple times throughout the piece, which is very well known. The strings often build up with one another to create a type of tension and anticipation throughout the movement. The piece appears to be written in ABA form, thus the listener has a clear idea of where the piece is going while listening to it.…

The performance attempted to give a dark but loving story which will keep you amused throughout the whole concert. I learned a lot about the choreographers in the performance by the way they presented themselves. Presentation means a lot and the way they proceeded was professional.
