Drugs do more to addicts than most realize. When someone’s addicted to something, they will do anything in their power to make sure they get that substance. Because of this, it can make addicts very hostile. Addiction is an awful habit that many people participate in. People who do drugs often do not know or even care about the harm they do to their body. Many health problems are being created. According to Recovergateway.org, the immune system is weakened, the liver has to work harder, and it could weaken the stomach and make them vomit and have abdominal pain. There are plenty more serious health problems such as seizures and strokes that come from participating in drug use. Furthermore, drugs have an effect on the brain. While using these substances, dopamine goes through the limbic system in large amounts. To illustrate, an example of a number showing how harmful drugs are, is presented on the site Recovergateway.org where they write, “Illicit drug users make over 527,000 costly emergency room visits each year for drug related problems.” This proves how harmful drugs really are to people. Just think for a minute, if the number of emergency room visits is this high, how many people are there participating in substance use? Marcia Clemmitt has an answer for this question: “U.S. addiction rates remaining steady at about 9 percent of the population” (par. 2). She is stating how many …show more content…
Even though drug abuse does harm the body in many ways, a good number of addicts do not know or care about the effects it has on them. Many addicts are only concerned with getting the substance and smoking, snorting, injecting or eating it. The majority of addicts does not care who they hurt in the process of using. It is sickening the way addicts decide to put their addiction above their families. Because of this, there are many reasons to why I feel so strongly about addiction affecting the addict more than it does the family. The reason for this is because several drug users lose the most important people in their lives since they choose their actions over their families. They might not realize it, but it is affecting their lives more than anyone because they are pushing everyone away. Christine Watkins wrote, “Addiction changes the dynamics in relationships, and fear for loved ones and uncertainty about the future loom large” (Watkins 143). She means that because of addiction, it changes the way many relationships are. It can come to the point where many families have to give up on hope for the addict. This goes as far as the family rarely speaking with or never speaking to the drug addict at all. This is a very painful process, both the family and the addict, have to go through. Another way this effects drug abusers is
