A great example of a harsh decision comes from the book Night by Elie Wiesel. Wiesel describes how the Jews were treated by the Nazi’s. One particular part, where the Jews are being forced to run grouped together in the dark. While they were running Wiesel witnessed a boy pretending not to notice his father falling behind. The boy had only done what any other would do by that point; cut off his weakest link in order to increase his own chance of survival. What has started out as sticking together only ended in separation. Rose, the movie’s popular heroine, is in love with Jack, they both struggle to stay alive as the ship sinks under water. In the final moments of the movie, Jack freezes to death and Rose is striving to survive. She could either stay in the water with her chance of being rescued dwindling or use every last bit of strength to signal a lifeboat many yards away looking for the live in the water. When the lifeboat is passing, Rose jumps into the water and finds a whistle on a lifeless man, she uses it and the lifeboat rescues her.
