My science fair project focuses on the Stroop Effect and how to eliminate it. Information on this subject is extremely limited but I will try my best to answer the research questions that I have put forth.
HISTORY
The Stroop effect was named after a man called John Ridley stroop. He discovered this phenomenon in the 1930’s. He had people try to name the color in which a word was printed, meaning that if you had the word “blue” printed in red ink, you would say “red”. Stroop found that it was easier to name the ink color when it corresponded with the word written, and it took longer for people to name the ink color when it did not match the word. He figured that the brain automatically read the written word, so when it …show more content…
Make sure that the ink color does not always match the word. (2) Find some volunteers to perform the experiment with. (3) Show your volunteers the cards with the ink that matches the word. Time them to see how long it takes them to name the color of the ink. (4) Show them the cards with ink that doesn’t match the word. Time them again. (5) Record your data.
WHAT CAUSES THE STROOP EFFECT
The cause of the Stroop Effect is believed to be a phenomenon called ‘interference’. Stroop’s results showed that there is much less interference when reading a word than naming the color of a word. Our brain finds the word itself more important than the color of a word, so it disregards the color and automatically reads the word. Asking your brain to do something against its automatic response causes an interference, making it harder to name the correct color.
HOW CAN YOU ELIMINATE THE STROOP EFFECT
In my project, I intend to find a way to eliminate the Stroop Effect. The only way that this has previously been done (that I could find) was through hypnotism. I plan on simply warping and mirroring words so they are harder to read. I believe that if the word itself is harder to read, then the color will be easier to
