Have you ever wondered what muscles are used when playing volleyball? Lets slow spiking a volleyball all the way down to each individual movement and figure out what muscles are involved from the very beginning to the end. To understand these many movements required in a volleyball spike you must first know the steps of spiking a volleyball, the joints, and the muscles involved. Volleyball is a widely known sport that uses all major muscle groups in just one simple movement such as the spike.

When it comes to the volleyball spike there are many steps involved to complete it correctly. Make sure you stretch both the arms and the legs for approximately 10-20 seconds each before you start. Stretching all these different muscles will reduce

They all work in a certain firing order to help athletes perform the volleyball spike. To perform the approach after the ball is set you will use the tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, soleus, biceps femoris, semimembraneous and semitendonous to complete the "Left foot, right foot, left foot" movement. As the last two steps are taken use the triceps brachii muscles to extend your arms downwards and backwards. In this same motion use the biceps femoris, semimembraneous, and semitendonous muscles to bend the knees. It is great for a professional athlete to be aware of the joints and muscles used in their sport so they can take care of, strengthen, and protect the muscles that will mainly be used. They can work on just the muscles involved in the sport to make their performance that much greater. Knowing the origin, insertion and action of each muscle helps greatly even if you do not play sports because it can help people in their careers such as Massage Therapist, Physical Therapist, Fitness Trainer, and many other career situations.
