The Articles of Confederation was created to put the colonists in a position where they would have the freedom to govern themselves. Each state was sovereign. That later became a problem. Some of the other flaws found in the Articles of Confederation were: it didn’t address the collection of taxes, and there wasn’t an official court system. The plans discussed were the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan. The Virginia Plan was proposed by former United States President James Madison (James Madison Biography, n.d.). The Virginia Plan suggested a two house legislature. The lower houses’ representation will be based on population. In order to be a member of the upper house you’ll have to have been voted in by a member of the lower house. The New Jersey Plan was proposed William Patterson, former associate justice of the Supreme Court. The New Jersey Plan suggested a one house legislature; each state will have the same amount of representation. After much discussion and arguing, Roger Sherman, a delegate from Connecticut proposed merging the two plans; this became known as The Great Compromise also known as the Connecticut Compromise. The Great Compromise (The Connecticut Compromise) is a two house legislature where the lower house (House of Representatives) bases its membership on population and the upper house (Senate) each state gets two votes (Rakove, n.d.). There was still the debate between northern and southern states regarding representation. Southern states wanted slaves to count representation, even though in the south they were considered property. Federalist were a higher class of people than the Antifederalists. Federalist desired the constitution because it provided the central government with a lot of power. Antifederalists were dubious of the constitution because it did not give the state government enough power. The federalist wrote letters in hopes of persuading the states to sign the Constitution. The biggest issue the Anti-Federalist had with the Constitution was that it did not ensure the rights of individuals. It wasn’t until the Bills of Rights were added to the Constitution that the Antifederalist agreed to sign it. The Bill of Rights guaranteed individual liberties. The Bill of Rights are as follows: The first is R.A.P.S. The right to assemble, the right to press, the right to free speech; the second is the right to bear arms, the third is quartering troops, the fourth is searches and seizures, the fifth is protection against self-incrimination, the sixth is the right to a fair and speedy trial, the seventh is civil suits, the eighth is bail and punishment, the ninth is power to the people, the tenth is power to the states (Technological Solutions, Inc.
