The Story Of The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire

Decent Essays
March 25th, 1911, the fire started by a cigarette bud in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. It was a place woman working day in and day out making these Shirtwaists. The company occupied the seven floors. They could not get the fire out because the hose for the water hose was rusted, the factory did not have a sprinkler system, they had an elevator but it only made 4 trips before it broke down, people jumped to their deaths down the shaft and out the windows.
146 people died from the fire, some dying from the fall, burning to death or dying from the smoke. This was served as a cautionary tale that helped redefine the American industrial workplace.

“Whatever the number, they had no chance of escape” (Argersinger, 73), as only a few remembered the fire escape that was inadequate anyways as it only consisted of “a lone ladder running down to a rear narrow court, which was smoke filled as the fire raged one narrow door giving access to the ladder.” (Argersinger, 73). Given those conditions, the few workers that could have remembered about the fire escape would probably still have died in the incident. Another fact to be taken into consideration is that the rooms where workers made the shirtwaists were crammed with tissue paper, lace, and muslin goods, all extremely inflammable materials.…

In New York Burning, author Jill Lepore traces the history of the conspired slave rebellion, which transpired through “[a] series of fires in the winter of 1741.” As “panicked white colonists” began to fear “a slave uprising, [they] set off a cycle of arrests, accusations, hasty trials, executions and more arrests.” This was New York City in 1741 and the victims were predominantly slaves. Through the limited sources found on the slave conspiracy, Jill Lepore questions the validity of the writings found and takes a deeper look at the legislative and societal conditions between the slaves and their masters. By making use of excerpts from Jill Lepore’s New York Burning, I will discuss the contradiction of white colonists idea of liberty, versus their enslavement of thousands of African Americans and their justifications for it.…
