The cavemen painted on walls in order to document and tell the stories of their lives. In the more modern era, books, especially for children, are filled with pictures in order to help convey the ideas of the writer to all who read his books. This idea of pictures to help support book is shown very well in Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco’s book Days of Destruction Days of Revolt.…

As I began flipping through the pages of The Arrival I noticed it was a wordless picturebook and purely relies on the images to tell the story. My initial reaction was the use of color the author chose. As you open the book up to the first page you notice nine individual frames of possessions that you would see in a home along with a family picture and if you turn to the next page a bigger image is shown on the right of the mom and dad. For example, we are never told directly the status of the family or as to why the dad is packing. If you look at the nine frames in Part One, you notice the objects in the frames are portrayed in the background and foreground of the bigger picture on the following page.…

For the multimodal project, I wrote and illustrated a picture book, titled Sebastian’s Epiphany, which documents a day in the life of Sebastian, an anthropomorphized teenage mouse who is always using his smartphone. The reader follows Sebastian as he eats breakfast, attends math class, and relaxes during recess. Sebastian’s day seems like a normal teenager’s school day until the point when he walks home; he is so distracted by his phone that he does not notice that his sister is being attacked by a cat. Only after this tragedy does Sebastian realize the consequences of his smartphone habits, and his phone is never seen again. Every scene in the book will have corresponding screenshot of Sebastian’s phone which allows the reader to see…

Summary: This book focuses on the different forms of Jazz music that have been developed throughout the years. It starts at the beginning when Jazz was created in the post-slavery society of America and continues up to modern day artists such as Armstrong and Ellington. Justification: Since I am not sure exactly what type of music he likes, I added another book about Jazz. I think that this book will be a hit because there is so much good information in this picture book. The pictures are also really well drawn, so you can see what is going on within the text.…

Found texts are comprised of various genres that contain a plethora of categories, but in particular, receipts. Receipts have increasingly gained recognition over time for a multitude of reasons. Similarly to greeting cards, receipts have a formulaic appearance which makes them recognizable and visible to the public eye. A receipt obtained from Hard Rock Cafe resembled the pieces by Dennis Baron, Roland Barthes, and David Levy. Receipts have become a powerful measure of determining emotional, mental, and cultural assumptions about the reader.…

“The Man I Killed” was the chapter I chose to do my The Things They Carried project on. This chapter is extremely different than the other chapters in the book because it truly shows what it is like to take the life of another in a war. The murder of someone is almost always gruesome, especially when that person who has been killed was killed by grenade. When creating the face of the vietcong man I used a heated-up plastalina clay had the ability to be molded and carved out into the shape necessary for the victim. Using a tool typically used to shaping and smoothing down rough edges of clay, I was able to carve out the “star” shaped hole where an eye was supposed to be, the hole of the mouth, and a shallow indent where skin would later be peeling from.…

In the essay “States” After the Last Sky by Edward Said he writes about estranged Palestinians. The essay starts with photos of Palestinians and about their living situations. Palestinians are forcefully removed from their homes “[they] can be moved again,” Said is explaining how some Palestinians do not have a place to call home; Palestine is lost. The way Said uses the word exiled you can say that Said felt like he was uneasy and maybe he identified himself as a part of the Palestinian group. Exile is a physical and emotional experience.…
