The Starry Night Mask Meanings

Improved Essays
A mask is meant to hide someone; whether it is a robber sporting a ski mask, a child in a Halloween costume, or a hero in a comic book. Of course, a mask’s purpose can be twisted to represent the person underneath, rather than creating an entirely new identity. Horror movies with masked killers are a good example of this. For English class, I have to create a mask that represents who I am.
The first noticeable detail about the mask is how it is divided into two sides. The meaning behind this relates to the fact that I’m a Gemini. In western astrology, there are twelve zodiac signs, with Gemini being the third sign. Gemini are supposedly two faced. While I don’t consider myself two faced, I do think that the general description for Gemini somewhat

The confetti is placed in an irregular manner, giving it an uneven feel that contrasts the mask’s smoothness. The texture symbolizes my imperfections, because I am not flawless. As much as I want life to go smoothly, there is no avoiding the rough patches.
The left hand side of the mask is my depiction of Vincent Van Gogh’s famous art piece, “The Starry Night”. This represents my liking of art. While Van Gogh’s art does not inspire my art itself, I do like his impressionistic art style. Another reason why I chose this painting for my mask is because of the swirling wind patterns and circular shapes. I like to think that I’m an easygoing person that goes with the flow. Hence, the relaxed movements the strokes imply.
The right half of the mask is incomplete- at least, it appears to be. I have a bad habit of not wanting to finish what I started. It can be anything, from homework, art, goals, etc. Since honesty is the best policy, I will admit that having the mask look unfinished was not planned (at least it worked out in the end). At the top of the mask, the words “MADE IN NEW YORK” are written out. I was born in Brooklyn, New York. I would have added more detail to further express that, but I was not raised there. Below those words is my name written in Khmer (the Cambodian language). My family is from Cambodia, and I was raised there for a brief time. Unfortunately, I’m not totally fluent in Khmer nor can I write

Society has cultivated the human mind to filter knowledge and moral values that are taught from birth. William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies traces society's flaws back to the true nature of humans when they are free from the constraints of society. The novel explores a group of English boys who are stranded on an uninhabited island during a period of war after a plane crash. They attempt to govern themselves in order to sort things out while waiting for rescue. However, as time passes by, things begin to get out of control and situations manifest, tempting the boys’ desire for order.…

The people made parts for the masks called the universe, appendages and other stuff to add to it. The universe was usually around the mask to represent something, maybe living in the universe was it. Appendages were the carved animals, dance stuff, or some other stuff that were sticking out of the mask. Masks were patiently made by men with their hands and was hard to them. I didn’t know how the masks were painted until I heard that they use to walk miles to the hills to get colored rocks.…

In Lord of the Flies, the motif of the mask is shown towards the end of the story in order to prove that an object, such as the paint, enabled the boy’s to camouflage the true evil, and empowerment hidden deep within them, showing their uncivilized nature, as well as their lack of a moral conscious, which is seen throughout the story. For example, the mask manifests each individual into a war-like persona. It became a part of the individuals, such as the littluns it made them feel invisible. “ the littlun howled, creased and crimson…”, this shows how the littluns are transforming into a new beast and their decline in civilization. In the beginning, the littluns were quiet and keep to themselves, but now with painted faces they have a…

The reverse of natural order is also shown when Gloucester rejects his legitimate son Edgar much to the benefit of his illegitimate son Edmund who is deemed to be a "Loyal and natural boy" (II. i. 84) by his father. This is, as it were, the carnivalesque-grotesque version of the play's main plot when the story of Cordelia's disinheritance leads finally to the delegitimization of the king himself. The reversal here triggers several other grotesque distortions in the subplot. Here Edmund's mock-legitimization gives nature a free rein to intrude upon the judicial rule of the state. The love triangle between Edmund, Regan, and Goneril drives a lot of action in the final moments of the play and it is "a part of the play's general atmosphere of moral decay.…

My first impression when I viewed Mouth (for L'Oréal), New York, by Irving Penn, was wow, it’s so beautiful and colorful. When you look at this picture, you see a person’s lips with several different lipstick colors on them. The subject of this painting is obviously the lipstick, the colors in the pictures are different shades of red, purple, pink and brown, they are the focus point. The lipstick makes texture on the lips, creating a beautiful three-dimensional effect. I see several lines in this picture, mostly curved lines, there are no definite lines and the forms I see are basically the lips, nose and lipstick.…

Buku is a great example of someone who is trying to make a mark in the world and create his own heritage, having the desire to make his paintings “last as an eternal memory” (Mark Buku’s…). His determination during the time he was painting on the Seabrook Park wall under the bright, hot sun, is shown through his work (Horne). Masks are objects worn on the face, representing several meanings, varying with which tribes each masks came from, used in both ceremonial (sacrifices, entertainment, etc.) and practical (assassination, war, disguise, etc.) acts. Each masks are created through different means, using different materials, and with different symbols on each masks (History…).…

According to the Meriam- Webster Dictionary, a mask is, “something that serves to conceal or disguise” (“Mask”). A mask does not necessarily have to be a physical object, it could also be a façade that a person uses to protect themselves from being seen as vulnerable by others. “We Wear the Mask” by Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Townie by Andre Dubus, are pieces of literature that depict the use of an intangible mask in two very different ways. In both pieces the narrators put up a front to hide their true selves, however the narrators use the front differently and eventually accept their masks in different ways. “We Wear the Mask,” written by Paul Laurence Dunbar is a realist poem about people pretending to be happy as a way to cover their true…

The mouth of the mask is open and the bottom lip sticks out more than the upper lip. While the most of the mask varies in a green color, the eyes appear to be a simple black on white (or cream). There appears to be something in the mouth, although it does not look like it is teeth. I could be wrong, but from looking at several pictures from a few different angles, the left eye in the mask appears to be pointing slightly inward making the mask look a little…
