Being a dramaturgical theorist studying gym behavior would give one many interesting subjects and possible things to study. By simply looking at the stereotypes associated with gym culture, you could see them as one huge performance. The best, and most widely known example of this “performance” would be the men from the show Jersey Shore. Ever since Jersey Shore had been popularized I personally, have seen a rise in “gym going.” Going to the gym to these men gives them a sense of prestige and dignity, otherwise known as Face.…

The Divine Dramatist, written by Harry S. Stout contains an overview of the life of George Whitefield and accounts the rise of modern evangelism. The claim that the author makes is that George Whitefield is rightly labeled Anglo-America’s first modern celebrity. Throughout his book, Stout explains how the genius and passion of Whitefield helped the church. Specifically, in the eighteenth century, as there was a growing desire to see the inherited ideas of sermons come alive in ways that would compel the rapidly changing landscape of America. The book is comprised of an introduction as well as fifteen chapters outlining the life, work, and impact George Whitefield had on evangelicalism.…
I aim to create a historically accurate stage play telling the stories of women and African Americans living in early twentieth century New Orleans. During this time a civil war raged throughout New Orleans as vice laws attempted to contain the city’s underworld activities to a single red light district known as Storyville. With the growing number of Jim Crow laws and with the women’s suffrage movement in full effect the city’s moral reformers attempted to repress the rights of African Americans and the economically disadvantaged women who worked in the brothels. The story will follow the rise and downfall of three famous madams: Lulu White, Josie Arlington, and Willie Piazza whose growing power threatened the city’s respected upper class moral reformers. These madams were rebels who mocked the traditional values and roles that society forced upon women near the end of the Victorian era and challenged racial boundaries imposed by the city.…
This film shows how society prescribes us roles, and how filling these roles and expectations impacts our lives and who we are as social beings. The first example of Role Theory that was evident while watching this film was the representation of specific roles within our society. Many of these were very easy to identify,…
Here the actors established a clear strenuous dynamic and in doing so, conveyed to the audience that everyone will have to deal with challenging relationships and that life is purposelessness, thus creating dramatic…
“The World as Stage” by Bill Bryson is a book that supposedly discusses William Shakespeare, world renown play and sonnet writer. It seems to me that it is more of a 16th century history book. One of the keys to writing an impeccable essay is an introduction that pulls one in. It is almost impossible to do that with this subject’s lackluster. One of Bryson’s first personal statements of “The World as Stage” is his claim that the book was not written to fill the overflowing bookshelf of Shakespeare writings.…
Furthermore, symbolic interactionist analysis can classify this situation as evidence to support an alternative view of dramaturgical…
From a dramaturgical perspective, I perform my day to day life not only as I see fit but also in a way that allows me to coexist with other people also struggling through their own various statuses and roles. I am a woman; I have family and culture; I am a student. Throughout my daily social interaction, I am all of these at once, and I constantly mesh them together and swap between them to function with other actors on the stage I stand on. At the same time, I choose to move beyond common roles and be who I want to be, despite the conflict of existing in a world such as this. In these ways, I perform my everyday life as Goffman theorized, on a stage with lights upon me being what I am supposed to be and at the same time choosing my own way in being that…
This essay combines critical reflection with dramaturgical analysis to uncover some of the ethical questions that arose when working in applied ethnographic theatre with veterans of the US Armed Forces. In the aftermath of 9/11, theatre in the United States has grappled with the ongoing armed conflicts through a number of recent projects and initiatives performed throughout the country, including Basetrack Live (2014), Holding it Down: The Veterans’ Dreams Project (2013), and The Telling Project (2008-present). Each of these performances has taken a different approach to performance (e.g. historical dramatization, musical theatre, documentary theatre) and have involved veterans in a number of different capacities (as collaborators, performers,…
Abhimanyu Rajshekar (Block F) Context: Theatre of the Absurd has its roots set in the avant-garde experiments in art in the 1920’s-1930’s. It was strongly influenced by the horrors of World War Two, where the impermanence of values and morality, validity of conventions and the meaninglessness of human life and its social conventions were questioned. These beliefs were stimulated by the constant threat of nuclear annihilation in Europe in 1945, and played an important role in its rise in Europe. The absence of religion in contemporary life during that time period also contributed to its creation, and it sought to restore the importance of myth and ritual in daily life.…
According to Ngugi, “literature is a reflection on the aesthetic and imaginative planes, of a community’s wrestling with its total environment to produce the basic means of life… and in the process creating and re-creating itself in history.” This is also the basic premise of the play which sensitively registers the account of the Mau Mau, which had effectively sublimated in the documented history of the Jomo Kenyatta regime. It is noteworthy that the play opens with a song by a crowd of peasants and also the enactment of the Black people’s History. Through the song, they exhibit their solidarity, demand “uhuru” or complete freedom and glorify the power of resistance. This also penetrates into Ngugi’s project of “people’s theatre” which proposes…
How do we act as a human being in the society? Everyone plays differents roles and act differently to promote or we can say protect ourselves. We can tell that the whole society is a stage and everyone's an actor plays differently in the front stage. George Herbert Mead, a sociologist from the late 1800s, is well known for his theory of the social self, which includes the concepts of 'self,' 'me,' and 'I.' No matter what kind of environment, people always bring a "mask" for themselves to realize their wishes and become part of a group. According to Erving Goffman's play theory, the active and knowledgeable person can guide and control how others see themselves.…
In Absurd Drama, plot is eliminated, action simplified and language abused. Secondly, absurdist playwrights exploit dominant metaphors and a variety of real images in their plays, and sometimes even make position to legendary and biblical elements. Thirdly, abandoning rational structures of traditional theatre, many of the plays of the Theatre of the Absurd have a spherical structure, ending exactly as they begin loneliness, impossibility of communication and sterility are almost universal themes in the Absurdist Theatre. Pinter absorbs himself into the mainstream thinking and integrates all the three themes in almost all his significant plays. Loneliness prompts one to search for communication with others.…
