They increased rapidly on the miles of railroads in the US and the business booms took over like Rockefeller oil company and Carnegie’s steel company. America’s attention was mainly on improving the inside which caused us to be isolated to foreign policies before the Spanish-American War. The reconstruction previous of the war caused the US to gain the strength and the confidence needed to join the war against Spain. America had been isolated to foreign countries since 1812, because of Washington’s farewell address in which it advocated neutrality, especially with European countries. The choice to end neutrality with European Countries and to join the Spanish-American War against Spain later resulted in War World 1 and World War 2 which also adds to why this war was a pivotal change in foreign policy because of the long lasting effects it had. America got involved in the war because of several different factors such as yellow journalism, the attack on the USS Maine, and the interest in helping Cubans because of their territory. In result, we defeated the Spanish Fleet, and gained the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, and made Cuba a protectorate state which gave the U.S new power. The idea expansionism came from the idea of self-interested economic in which the U.S economy was suffering from overproduction and the only cure to helping the situation was foreign markets. By 1900 America’s goods were three times greater it had been post Civil War. The vast increase of investments after the Spanish-American War was very beneficial to America. After the Spanish-American War, American investors poured billions into different markets like in the Philippines, including mines, railroads, and sugar, banana, and coffee plantations. Multinational corporations began after that in the United States and supported federal expansionist or, sometimes referred to as imperialistic foreign policy. The U.S dominantly controlled the Caribbean Islands enforcing new government, trade rules, and it allowed us to have two new naval stations. In effect it greatly helped America turn into the mother country. One of the results that came from the new foreign policy was the Panama Canal ordered by Theodore Roosevelt passed through Central America making it easier to trade with Asia and the passage protected the new territory states.
