How People of The Slums Are Betrayed
India is one of the world’s largest countries undergoing poverty, where harsh circumstances promote slum villagers to involve themselves in unjust acts. The people fight daily against deadly diseases, and corruption. Many residents spend their day trying to figure out the best way to make a rupee and rise above poverty, utilizing any tactics in the hope of bettering their lives. Families compete against each other to get ahead socially and financially. Religion divides the community between Hindu and Muslim. Examples of these issues are shown in the book Behind The Beautiful Forever, by Kathrine Boo. Issues explained in her book correlate with the facts presented in the articles : “Economic Growth, Law, and Corruption: Evidence from India” by Sambit Bhattacharyya and Raghbendra Jha, “All Slums Are Not Equal” by Khan, Zulfia et al. and “Current State of Muslims In India” by Ibrahim Ali Khan. Boo argues that, do to lack of equality, India’s slum dwellers are forced to indulge in corruption, instead of them working together to overcome poverty in the fight for survival.
