The people fight daily against deadly diseases, and corruption. Many residents spend their day trying to figure out the best way to make a rupee and rise above poverty, utilizing any tactics in the hope of bettering their lives. Families compete against each other to get ahead socially and financially. Religion divides the community between Hindu and Muslim. Examples of these issues are shown in the book Behind The Beautiful Forever, by Kathrine Boo. Issues explained in her book correlate with the facts presented in the articles : “Economic Growth, Law, and Corruption: Evidence from India” by Sambit Bhattacharyya and Raghbendra Jha, “All Slums Are Not Equal” by Khan, Zulfia et al. and “Current State of Muslims In India” by Ibrahim Ali Khan. Boo argues that, do to lack of equality, India’s slum dwellers are forced to indulge in corruption, instead of them working together to overcome poverty in the fight for survival.

Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers focuses on the struggles of Annawadi’s residents as many of them attempt to create a better life for their families. A small slum located near the Mumbai airport, Annawadi highlights the juxtaposition of an Indian underclass and the growing economy of the country around them. While so many of these families, through an expanding global market economy, can see the benefits of globalization and capitalism, the potential upsides of these systems maintain out of reach as most Annawadians deal with the harsher realities of poverty, hunger, and exploitation. As the text looks into many aspects of daily life in a particular slum between 2007 and 2011, a debilitating connection can be seen between capitalism…

In his book, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian,” Sherman Alexie discussed the required strategies for overcoming poverty. The book points out that white people have more hope than Native Americans living on the reservations (Alexie, 45). This theme of hope helps outline the characteristics required for a poor individual to stay motivated in the possibility of getting out of poverty. Junior and his sister, Mary seem to have pursued hope with a similar approach; they both moved out of the reservation. Why then is Junior the only one who ended up with the hope of overcoming poverty?…

Katherine Boo not only describes unhappiness and poverty in Annawadi but also shows how structural poverty and inequality produced by globalization regulate the life in “Behind the beautiful forevers”. Annawadi is a slum of Mumbai in India and is surrounded by the airport and five splendid hotels. It is hard for Annawadians to get jobs in the big city so they dig up waste and sell recyclable trash for living. In an age where corruption usually prevails, many Indians still endeavor to live humbly, hoping to someday ascend another step on the caste ladder; however, this only occurs once in a blue moon. Another ideal example demonstrating the rarity of climbing up the social ladder in India is in the world-renowned, Golden Globe winning movie, Slumdog Millionaire (perhaps its demonstration of this unique occurrence is one of the reasons why it won the Academy Award for…

This is a community of primarily trash-pickers and scavengers, with an extremely small percentage of residents with permanent jobs and a barely livable average income. These people live right under the noses of large and gorgeous hotels and airport buildings, watching rich westerners come and go. One of these slum dwellers, Mirchi, captures this stark contrast when he compares his surroundings to beautiful things while his community is so nasty in between. Yet, this book does not portray those in the slum of Annawadi as dirty or bad people whatsoever. While the travelers and wealthy may see the poor as less than them, this book shows that just because those in Annawadi may have less material, they are not of less worth as people.…

In the slums of Mumbai, India, in a half acre in the shadows of Mumbai International Airport, resides the city of Annawadi. A poor place, where children wander trash heaps in search of something valuable to sell so that they may have a mouthful of food. Yet, the city is a place of rising hope because of the affluence that is slowly spreading through India. Katherine Boo is a reporter, trying to spread awareness in her book “Behind the Beautiful Forevers” that extreme poverty has not been eliminated and, as George Orwell would say, “[push] the world in a certain direction” so that attention is called to extreme poverty. To push her ideas, Boo uses appeal to emotion, comparisons, and details to assert her want of better living conditions for…

Marco Rubis, the senator of Florida, once said “The American dream is a term that is often used but also often misunderstood. It isn’t really about becoming rich or famous. It is about things much simpler and more fundamental than that.” In some sense, Rubis’ words shed some light on the ideology concerning the American dream; people often perceive wealth and fame as the sole testament in acquiring the American dream, and due to these misconceptions, believe the death of the American dream. However, that is false.…

In The White Tiger, Aravind Adiga portrays a gut-wrenching, vivid display of a country that is defined by the oppression of the proletariat by both the super-structure and bourgeoisie. India is a relatively new “free” country, and can be defined by three periods: the early caste/pre-colonization, the British rule/colonization, and Western globalization/post-colonization. During the last period, an economy based in capitalism grew from the ashes of the previous British colonization where a vacuum for power was left after India received freedom from their previous oppressors. However, a transition into running their own country saw a government that only cared about making the rich, richer put into place, therefore further suppressing the proletariat,…
