I personally believe that grocery stores as well as production companies use their skills and knowledge against their customers and consumers to further advance their productions to increase their sell rates, while thousands of Americans are suffering from obesity and unhealthy habits due to the foods they purchase and consume from these companies. Behind the scenes of the production of food is a longline of scientists, team members, and experts who are working hundreds of hours and spending millions of dollars to yield the best-selling, most addictive products they can. In the short essay The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food Michael Moss teaches his readers the secrets behind the process of junk food production. Moss states that “It’s not just a matter of poor willpower on the part of the consumer and a give-the-people-what-they-want attitude on the part of the food manufacturers. What I found over, four years of research and reporting, was a conscious effort- taking place in labs and marketing meetings and grocery-store aisles-to get people hooked on foods that are convenient and inexpensive” (pg. 477). Many people believe that those with obesity are at fault for having their disease, but in my opinion that is not the case. If companies are using millions of dollars and scientific brain knowledge against the functioning of the human brain, there is no way that consumers are expected to fight the urge to want more. The foods produced to make the brain thrive, needing more with additive sugars and chemicals, but not only are the chemicals giving junk food their popularity, but so is the way the item looks, smells, and feels, which gives the pleasure one needs when enjoying a snack. While keeping this in mind grocery stores are also using millions of dollars and scientific knowledge in which they use to their advantage. These stores know what type of shopping experience people enjoy, the placement of items on shelves differing from low to high, the type of items that are grouped together in aisles, and the checkout lanes that offer name brand items in smaller portions in case you need
