9/8 The Sermon on the Mount
10/05/2015 Medieval European History

The second most important teaching of The Sermon on the Mount is that God’s followers should not worry about food or clothing, because life is much more than that. Jesus assures the people that if they serve their Father, they will be able to “seek and find” everything they need to live a comfortable life (7:8). They do not need to work to obtain food or clothes, as God will provide it for them. He says that only pagans run after material wealth, while the true followers “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness” (6:33). The main point of this book was that we should pursue Radical devotion to Christ rather than pursue worldly comforts and passions. In Platt’s’ eyes this means giving portions of our wealth, and pursuing world missions, especially to those in radical need. However, he almost seems to suggest such pursuits as being godlier than others. He acknowledges that we are given wealth to use for the glory of God, but ignores the fact that He also gives it to be enjoyed as well. Furthermore, he does suggest Christians should be cutting down our living expenses to mostly necessities, while commending people who are selling all of their possessions almost randomly and pursuing missions.…

Ronald J. Sider writes a compelling and thought-provoking book about affluent and wealthy Christians in a world that is getting increasing needy. One of his chapters covers the topic of economic relationships among God’s chosen people. After reading the chapter, I was surprised to see several differences among the Jerusalem church and the twenty-first-century church. I discovered that the early church was much more generous with their money and resources and this challenged me to think critically about my own personal wealth and how the community of wealthy believers are using their money. Sharing of money and wealth can be seen as early in the law but it wasn’t until Jesus’s time that the sharing really began and was lived out.…

Sermon Focus After reading what Long said about a sermon I found that it requires many different techniques in composing a proper sermon. A refined sermon is one that is critiqued and refined to fit the demands of the congregation, yet without the teacher (Holy Spirit) it will be on none effect. Consequently, a sermon is to be rectified by the preacher as they flow through the Holy Spirit to conclude the discourse with the necessary components for the congregation. In fact, Long stated, “A focus statement is a concise description of the central, controlling and unifying theme of the sermon. In short, this is what the whole sermon will be “about.”…

Going back to the origin of the word "religion", It may have come from the Latin word "religare"- meaning "to tie fast" or "bind together". I really like this definition because I can relate greatly to it in my past "religious experience". My faith is what keeps me grounded; it is what keeps me from falling apart in the chaos of the world. I have significantly noticed this when my faith has started to hinder- more specifically when I have returned to my faith. I realize how much of a mess my life has become without God; whether thats emotionally or physically out of control.…

“Set your affections on things above; love one another; commune at the table of our Lord in one spirit; worship in spirit and in truth; and if daily adoring, imploring, and living the divine Life, Truth, Love, thou shalt partake of the bread that cometh down from heaven, drink of the cup of salvation, and be baptized in Spirit,” wrote Mary Baker Eddy in 1898 (Christian Science Versus Pantheism). Mrs. Eddy (as she is colloquially referred to by her followers) was the woman who came to found the Christian Science religion, based on the metaphysical New Thought movement, in 1879 (Christian Science, “What is Christian Science?”). The process of sermon formation takes on a different character for each preacher, a character as unique as the preacher themselves. The best approaches to preaching put the text first and allow the Holy Spirit through the text determine the best way to preach a particular passage. My personal approach to sermon formation has evolved over time as I have grown in my Christian walk, as my knowledge of the Bible and as I gain more experience as a preacher. My approach has especially evolved after having the opportunity to apply many of the concepts that were studied in the course of this semester. Currently I remain one of three people in our church pursing ordination as an elder in the Church of the Nazarene all being mentored by our senior pastor.…

Undoubtedly Paul, “the apostle of the gentiles”, has become one of the founding fathers of what we now know as missions. He exemplified the great commission in its entirety by “going into all the world and preaching the gospel to all creations.” Even though Paul had a zeal for the conversion of his fellow citizens, his ultimate call was not restricted by this. His call, with the leading of the holy spirit (Acts 16:6,7), was to educate people, “from every tribe and language and nation and creed” (Rev 5:9), of the world about the gospel and its life transforming power. With the boundless accomplishments of Paul’s recorded journeys, one would wonder if he had an intended strategy.…
