What is the Self ?
Part 1: “The Process of Figuring Things Out”
With the task at hand I think an important question to ask is why are we beginning here. Why must we start with “The Process of Figuring out” and to what end did we bask in this concept? I believe it to be the basis of knowledge as it relates to human understanding.
As mentioned in Chapter 3 of The Search For Self-Understanding, “human beings have an insatiable desire to grasp meaning, to figure things out in the fullest sense possible.” (29) With this mind we should understand that the process of figuring out can only occur when the desire to is accompanying it as well. As all creatures of the Earth do, from the moment we are born (or whatever stage of development we can feel), we take in sensations and perceive the world around us as our capacity to receive information allows us. The known as the level of experience. The next level of consciousness that I believe separates us from animals, is the “level of understanding”, which I will further expand upon later. It is here that we are capable of drawing insights and making sense of the information we have received. At the next “level of judgement” we can cast said judgement on the potential viability of possible truths and separate them from potential falsehoods. To their back lies a low wall and a fire which emits light into the cave. This light brings about shadows of objects and people from the outside world, leaving the prisoners with only the experiences of what they see and hear, the shadows and sounds accompanying them.
