She is a prejudice woman and doesn’t see African Americans, like Calpurnia, as equal to her. This influences her to beg Atticus to get rid of their housekeeper. Aunt Alexandra tries her best to convince him to let go of Calpurnia telling him that they have no need for her. She states that now that she’s with them she can do the house cleaning and cooking. Her attempts fail though, as Atticus refuses to fire Calpurnia. Atticus not only tells her that he won’t fire Calpurnia, but also says that she’s as much a family member as anyone is.

Many people were irate with the fact that an African American raped a innocent white girl. This influenced some white men to get together and start a lynch mob. These men were looking to get Thomas out of jail and lynch him for his wrongdoing. Atticus was going to let anyone do harm to his client that he knew was innocent. In order to protect Thomas from the mob, Atticus sits in front of the jail cell for a night. Soon, a group of men show up to the jail and demand Atticus to move out of their way. Atticus refuses to listen as the men threaten. Scout and Jem appear at the scene, and Scout gets the men to leave by talking to one of their members, Mr. Cunningham. Atticus calls his sister to the kitchen and reveals to her, Scout, Jem, and Calpurnia the story of what happened. He tells them how Thomas Robinson was shot seventeen times while attempting to escape from prison. Atticus and Calpurnia then go to Thomas Robinson’s house and tells his family the news. This news is difficult for Atticus to grasp, making it difficult to share with all it concerns. It wasn’t easy for Atticus to accept the fact that his client was given a guilty verdict.
