People may remember winners for their accomplishments, but people, especially remember people who put change in motion by taking a stand. These…
The world’s fourth most popular sport is a sport of focus, hand-eye coordination, movement, and competition. Tennis has been around since the 12th century, causing it to be extremely ancient. Like any other sport, it has witnessed discrimination against certain groups of people. The game has drastically changed its views and people that were once prejudiced-people of color and women- are topping the charts and adjusting the barriers even more by initiating equal pay and equal rules. The decrease of race and gender discrimination has increased the quality of play, and has changed the way that tennis is structured and viewed.…
Women’s role were very different compared to the men. During the 1950s, women were expected to do everything around the house, while men worked. Females were thought to clean the house, prepare coffee for the men before they woke up, and wait for the husband to come home from work. Before this, women were running industries while the men were off fighting WWII. Women were not happy with the lives they had to live because they had to relive the same day everyday.…
(Group tennis) has every one of those things. I incline toward playing for an option that is greater than myself." There is incongruity in King, fellow benefactor of World TeamTennis, being so enthusiastic about the group idea. The most acclaimed and powerful achievement of her tennis vocation came when she remained on the court independent from anyone else. That would be Sept. 20, 1973, in the Houston Astrodome when King, at that point 29, managed 55-year-old Bobby Riggs a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 defeat in what was charged as "The Battle of the Sexes."…
The 1920’s was known as the Golden Age of American sports. Bigger and better stadiums were built. “The most famous athlete in the United States in the 1920s was baseball star George Herman “Babe” Ruth, the right fielder for the New York Yankees”(Sumner, J). The 1920’s influenced the way sports are today. The way the 1920s influenced was by having game changing players like Babe Ruth, by becoming more organized and professional, and lastly is by becoming more popular.…
The quote “Girls can’t play sports” just got reversed. Women all over the world are making history, Billie Jean King effected women all over the world and the WNBA showed us that women will fight for what they believe is right. Women have risen from the suburbs and are now able to be called female athletes. Female athletes all over the world are making history that seemed impossible to.…
The film gave an overview of the role of women in sports, and how they're represented. One thing I agree with the film on was when it focused on the general population not seeing women being as strong as men, and women’s athletics not getting as much airtime as their male counterparts (Playing Unfair). I see this injustice playing out myself in my everyday life. Over the years I think women being seen as instantly weaker than men have certainly gotten better, but I believe that the underlying thought still exists. But, the coverage of women’s sports is a different story, to this day it is still under-reported on.…
You ask me how I feel when you say women cannot do the things men can do? I am a strong independent woman. Listen to me and I’ll tell you why. I have been through being told no by someone just because I am a woman. I go to school 8 hours a day, go home and do chores around the house, and help my grandpa to support him.…
Most notable was Martin Luther King and his famous “I Have a Dream” speech he gave. They all fought to stop the ruthless segregation in the states and keep them free forever. With all of the…
Gender based inequality has recently become a much debated topic. Feminism is on the rise and the fight for equal rights and opportunities for females is a common topic in contention among individuals. Regardless of the different perspectives of individuals there is no denying that gender is a common and unfortunate avenue for inequality. Girlfight was released in 2000 and challenges commonly accepted idea of gender both within the family and within sporting institutions. Social action towards overcoming gender inequality is seen throughout the progression of the story.…
The Impact of 1970’s Sports Sports are so much fun to play and watch; now an average major league baseball player makes three million dollars a year. Much of what is on television today are sports and highlights. Sports have created many celebrities over the years, like Michael Jordan and his wildly growing company with his clothing, and shoes. 1970 sports have been affected by new sports, feminist movement, and politics.…
Imagine a world where men are paid twelve times more than women for doing the same thing. This kind of world could still exist if it were not for Billie Jean King. She came from humble beginnings and made her way to the top, becoming one of the best tennis players in the world. Billie Jean completely changed not only the tennis world, but the world as a whole, using her prominence on court to make a difference for women’s rights and the LGBT community around the world.…
Women have struggled for years to gain equality with their male counterparts. In the 1960’s, women were expected to marry in their early 20’s and devote all of their time to domestic chores in the home. She was expected to watch after her children and have dinner ready for her husband he arrived home from work. Because of this, women had fewer opportunities in sports and were seen as inferior to men. It wasn’t until a famous tennis match in 1973 between a woman, Billie Jean King, and a man, Bobby Riggs, titled the “Battle of the Sexes,” that the nation started to realize women should be viewed on an equal playing field in not just sports but, in life.…
This can be equated to women being treated unequally because the sport has been very male orientated for so long. Messner’s conclusion of men being conditioned to enjoy sports from a young age still seems to be true after all this time. Sports are so conditioned into our society, mainly to straight, white, cis-gendered males, that it is next to impossible to get rid of now. Although there are cases of women breaking down those gender norms, it is only a hope that women will continue to break them…
