Folio Research Questions

In the beginning of this subject I was stumped as to what topic I should choose for my research question. In the end, I randomly picked a question from the ‘i-xplore’ research project journal I received from my teacher. The question I chose was “How are hotels in Australia trying to reduce their carbon footprints”. However, after weeks of inactivity, I decided to change my topic to something I was interested in. The new topic I decided on was “Who were Shoguns of the 17th century and what influences did they have on Japan”. I decided on this topic because of my love for history and I will be holidaying in Japan in December and believed this topic would offer me a greater insight into Japan’s culture.
Through the course of this project, I gathered

Other skills I’ve developed are: increased use of accurate language in my research project and improved selection of appropriate primary and secondary sources. I have developed these skills by evolving my literacy capability dot points. However, while the findings are not especially significant to the majority of people, they also serve to educate myself and others on the greatness of Japan.

I found the research project subject to be challenging, tedious, educational, and extremely frustrating. However, I am also enormously proud of my personal growth and increased researching skills. Now that I have completed the outcome, I feel a sense of peace, accomplishment, growth and triumph. The outcome has allowed me to reflect on my development in certain areas, such as: researching areas and using accurate language.

It has been extremely useful to me to have produced this outcome, as my findings have been educational, interesting and generally enlightening. In the course of completing this subject I learnt many interesting and informative things related to Japan, its history, culture and evolution through time. One of the more amusing things I learnt was about Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the fifth Shogun I researched. I discovered while researching, that Tsunayoshi proclaimed that the maltreatment of dogs was an offense punishable by

My Shogunate Investigation Throughout Japan’s history men were valued higher than woman, and men were the favoured gender. Both women and men had different traditions, roles and responsibilities in society. During the Shogunate period (1550 - 1850), Japanese women were mothers, entertainers and even samurai warriors and the social hierarchy played an important role on woman’s freedom and determined their future in society. Women had certain duties to fulfil, and served many men during their lifetime.…

Introduction Fukoku-Kyōhei, meaning “enrich the country and strengthen the military” quickly became the motto for a reinvigorated Japan stepping onto the global stage commanded by the West, while also acting as the mold for which they would inevitably fit through their rather abrupt transformation: The Meiji Restoration (Christensen 1). What may have ultimately began as an endeavor to modernize, may have also become the trigger for exponential societal change and an undertaking that would eventually boast Japan’s military confidence and induce drastic social change. The Meiji Restoration had significant rippling effects around the world during the late 1800’s and allowed Japan to become recognized as an influential world power, but also an…

When I started my project I had to figure out the order I wanted the video clips and statistic to go in (see appendix 9). So the video would not have a sense of clutter ness. I decided to open my video up with a news clip that portrayed racial profiling in action. The reason I choose to start it off with a news clip is because it grabs the viewer attention. The next thing in my video was a quote from Martin Luther King which stated “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”…

The writings I’ve worked on for the Research Problem have helped me towards achieving course learning outcome number 2: "Produce an extended writing project that uses research methods and research genres to explore a topic applicable to the course and that draws substantively on concepts from primary and/or secondary sources." From Beaufort, I learned that limiting your writing to one discourse community produces writers who are ill-prepared, highly demotivated and incompetent “products” (Beaufort 7). Hence, I had to learn subject matter knowledge, genre knowledge, rhetorical knowledge and the writing process knowledge concerning my professional field. By acquiring this knowledge, I was able to begin my becoming as a competent writer. From Johns and Swales, I learned what the term “discourse community” means.…

The Plague of Progress: Mishima’s Characterization and Views of Westernization A common misconception is that change always equates to progress, yet sometimes change can strip a society of its fundamental characteristics. Japan endured similar events, surrounding World War II that resulted in an increasingly Westernized country that lost it’s integrity and beliefs. In this allegorical novel, The Sailor who fell from Grace with the Sea, Yukio Mishima uses the characters Fusako, Ryuji and Noboru whom symbolize the different states of Japan to illustrate the plague of Westernization and convey the value of tradition in Japan. Primarily, Fusako embodies modern Japan with her obsession with foreign goods and focus on economic growth, which conveys…

Introduction Japan, in the nineteenth century, has gone through much reform. Prior to the Meiji Period, much of what the citizens knew was based around farming and agriculture . Japan had not yet explored trade with other countries, aside from China, which happened during the Taika Reform. The Taika Reform, happening in mid-sixth century, “opened Japan to the incorporation of new ideas and institutions from China .” Many scholars associate the Meiji Reform to the Taika Reform, although the Taika Reform was thought out, and carefully executed .…
