The Civil War was inevitable in many ways, Sectionalism is one. Sectionalism created conflict between states during this time period. Also, the Compromise of 1850, caused California to become a free state. New Mexico and Utah also could then vote on slavery. There was also a border dispute between Texas and New Mexico. The Compromise set the boundary lines of Texas. It also caused slavery to be banned in the District of Columbia The fugitive slave law was also enforced. In the year Abraham Lincoln was elected president. Many states did not agree with the policy that Lincoln had. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the union. All the other southern states followed after. Missouri, Kentucky and other slave states, did not secede.
