The story “To Build a Fire,” talks about a man trying to survive the harsh winter weather. Although the man was very alert, “Empty as the man’s mind was of thoughts, he was most observant. He noticed the changes in the creek, the curves and the bends. And always he noted where he placed his feet” (pg. 335). The man was not very quick. However, the men in this story are homeless. They are much more used to the storm and cold climate. Although they might be used to the weather conditions, they still get cold. The men did as much as they could to stay warm until the doors opened The men were huddled together, as close as they could get to one another, as in attempt to stay even the slightest bit warm. But thankfully, for them, every year there is a place that will give all of these men a nice place to stay and some food to eat. “In this street was located a charitable house where for five cents the homeless of the city could get a bed at night and, in the morning, coffee and bread” (Crane CR75). The Jungle is a lot like “The Men in the Storm” in some ways. The people in this story are from a much lower class. They do not live in a modern society like nowadays, or even have cities and buildings like the previous story. The characters in this story are so poor they do not even have a place to stay if they are homeless. All of the children, women, and men must eat whatever they find and use what they have. They can not afford to go to a store to buy groceries. They must hunt for whatever they want to eat, or whatever is available. The people do not have air conditioning or electronics such as we
