One of the categories covered by the FLSA is minimum wage. Minimum wage was first set in place back in 1938 with it starting at $.25 cents. Since then it has risen steadily to the current wage that was set in place back in july of 2009.Contrary to popular belief the minimum wage does not increase automatically. Congress must pass a bill which the President signs into law in order for the minimum wage to go up. Many states also have their own minimum wage laws. Since there is states where the employee is subject to both the state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is given the higher minimum wage rate. The FLSA says that employers are allowed to pay employees under 20 years of age a lower wage for a limited period, 90 calendar days
