They were very strict when they said they only wanted christians to live in Spain. They wanted Catholic Monarchs in charge of Spain, no Muslims or Jews. In 1478 the Spanish Inquisition was established to get Muslims and Jews out of Spain and unite the people in Spain with one religion. If they didn’t agree to this, they would get executed or kicked out of the country. They also sponsored Christopher Columbus’ voyage in 1492. Christopher Columbus was meant to find easier ways to access Asia, but instead he ended up in, what we call, America. He was able to take that voyage because of Ferdinand and Isabella’s care to sponsor him. Also in 1492, Ferdinand and Isabella captured Granada and made all the Jews and Moors convert to christianity or, as I mentioned above, gets moved out of Spain. Ferdinand and Isabella were very accomplished. They conquered all the land south of the Pioneer Mountains, except for Portugal. Ferdinand and Isabella changed Spain. They turned it into a unified and altered nation, from a confused and separated state it was before. Between the Spanish Inquisition, sponsoring the voyage of Christopher Columbus, which helped gain power for Spain, and uniting the largest kingdoms located in Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella made a lot of huge accomplishments. The Spanish Inquisition would only mean something to those who have a little love towards the catholic church. If someone didn’t believe with the catholic church, the Spanish Inquisition would most likely mean nothing to them. Without Ferdinand and Isabella sponsoring Columbus, Spain would not have as much power. Funding Christopher Columbus for his goods and simple needs gave Spain more power. The Spanish Inquisition was to ensure that there was no religious freedom in Spain. It definitely impacted history as we look at it today. The Inquisition was on and off again. Also, without it, Spain would not be the way it is today religious wise. Today in Spain, christianity and catholicism basically take over Spain.
