As stated in a recent journal article on the concept of compassion, based on Rodger’s method of analysis the definition of empathy and sympathy are compared with that of compassion. Empathy is described “as a family of responses to another “that are more other-focused than self-focused, including feelings of sympathy, compassion, tenderness, and the like” and sympathy was described as “an emotional reaction that is based on the apprehension of another’s emotional state or condition and that involves feelings of concern and sorrow for the other person” (Goetz, Keltner, & Simon-Thomas, 2010, p. 351). Theoretical construct Based upon analysis of previous research, it is evident that research into compassion is less prevalent than compassion fatigue (Kagen, 2014). According to Gilbert (2005), compassion can be divided into two parts: 1) a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune and 2) a strong desire to help stop the suffering. The desire to help stop the suffering is what separates compassion from empathy. A plethora of research has identified that compassion is reduced when a person is continuously exposed to compassion inducing stimuli, known as compassion fatigue (Conrada & Kellar-Guentherb, 2006).…

All of us have problems, and we all wish that they could be taken away in a minute. Since all of us have experienced problems we know how it feels so we can feel empathy for others when we see them going through tough times. That isn’t any different in the world of the Norse Gods. They are faced with family struggles, feeling they're not good enough, trust issues, failure, and death. The authors of Loki’s Wolves, K.L. Armstrong and M.A. Marr, use dialogue to stir empathy.…

Schopenhauer and Nietzsche on Compassion Many different interpretations of the word compassion exist. For me, compassion involves a deep feeling of sympathy and sorrow for another human being or animal who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a wish to help them. Although it is strongly related to altruism and empathy, compassion is something different - it is an immense feeling of ‘suffering’ together and then doing something about it. However, in the history of philosophy, compassion was often related to pity. Mariette Willemsen wrote that compassion is a “neutral term for a feeling that is often called pity in the English tradition [...] and Mitleid by German philosophers” (Schopenhauer and Nietzsche) (p.182).…

I have been in the dental field for over 20 years and repeatedly I have seen the same challenges transpire, patients not coming back in for treatment and getting lost in the system. This usually happens when the patient becomes overwhelmed by the treatment plan and do not understand where they need to start. These patients then become the ones that only come in for emergency treatments to get out of pain. In the video, Empathy: The Human Connection to Patient Care, it pointed out that as medical providers, we become desensitized to the people we are treating (Cleveland Clinic, 2013). This usually happened when the office is busier than usual, the schedule is over booked, or the office is running short on staff, causing patient to slip through…

Sympathy has much more to do with feelings of compassion and pity. It involves agreement with the other party which discourages further exploration and expression of one`s interests and feelings. Sympathy creates the need to reduce one`s own personal distress leading to a loss in objectivity and ability to solve the other person`s problems. Empathy in communication is expressed in two distinctive parts which are incorporated in thinking and feeling (McLaren, 2013). In thinking, one expressed an understanding of the information that has been passed by the other person.…
