The Role Of Discrimination In America

Discrimination began the moment one group of people realized there are other humans out in the world who are different from them, people who think differently, act differently, and look differently. African Americans arguably received the most backlash, and the racism against them is still present in today's society. This discrimination is illustrated in the given videos, True Colors, The New Racism in America 2007: Whose Fault Is It NOW?, Racism Interviews, Father of White Girl Rejects Black Boyfriend | "What Would You Do?", and Most Shocking Racism Social Experiments Compilation. These videos show that discrimination still plays a major role in the lives of minorities all over the United States and strongly addresses the issue we have had for hundreds of years.

When I watched the videos an overwhelming sadness and compassion came over me for the African Americans being interviewed and put into the experimental situations. It was very difficult for me to process the extent people will go if they believe their race is superior to another's, for it is unfair and inhumane. It is truly disappointing that some white Americans still feel

Discrimination can happen anywhere from anyone, even by someone you would least expect it from, such as a teacher. I have experienced sexist teachers favoriting male students more than female students, to the point where I felt it was effecting the quality of my education. There have also been various slang phrases developed from today's youth which are extremely offensive to white girls, for example, "the basic white girl". This phrase is widely used by teenagers across the country, however when used it is very uncommon for one to intentionally use it as an insult, which shows how often Americans discriminate against each other without realizing it. Everyone has discriminated at some point in their life, even if they did not do so

Social and Cultural indicators suggest that America is on the verge, or has already become, a truly color-blind nation”. This inconstancy brings me back to the mode of conditioning. We are brought up to believe that all racism is gone because the media wants us to believe that it is obsolete. This conflicts with when we see with our peers, who are minorities, struggling to get a job. We still want to hold onto the idea…

America has not always the great country we have been lead to believe. Since the end of the civil war, racism against blacks grew greater and greater with every passing day making it harder for these people to live their lives. This leads to the unfair treatment of immigrants trying to find a new life in America after being pushed out of their countries by poverty, revolution, and starvation. These events happen with an incompetent government only interested in doing anything to benefit itself. America has treated the people living within and arriving at the country with discrimination with an incompetent government.…

United States is considered to be a melting pot of many ethnicities. These ethnicities have helped United States grow, develop, and change by working together. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, the Progressive Era, progression had become possible by looking past ethnic background and uniting the people as Americans to accomplish equality in rights, benefits, and work for all. However, it must be noted that these accomplishments of color America where not made by verbal dispute for equality but by working together and physically pushing through prejudice and racism till they reach their goal. “The wisest among my race understand that the agitation of questions of social equality is the extremist folly, and that progress in the enjoyment of all the privileges that will come to us must be the result of severe and constant struggle rather than of artificial forcing” ("Booker T. Washington Delivers the 1895 Atlanta Compromise Speech.").…

Why is racism so deeply rooted among American history? Why is something as simple as skin color such subject to prejudice and discrimination in today’s society? The United States of America is built off of cruel acts of slavery and racism. So many white Americans did not realize that the acts they performed were horribly wrong and inhumane. They excused themselves simply because darker skin meant that that person was also inferior.…

Topic 1 Participation Assignment 2 “What We Talk About When We Talk About Race in America” I found a lot of points within the discussions from all three guests that suggest systematic racism. However, Paul Butlers touched heavily on structural discrimination being found in our society including blacks being targeted by police, making less money, not having access to housing benefits, and being overlooked for jobs, mortgages, loans, and other opportunities more available to whites. Each guest had a great deal of perspective to contribute to the conversation. Paul Butler, author and professor at Georgetown University, focused greatly on White privilege and structural discrimination.…

Not only did I realized that the actions they took were discriminatory but also a form of oppression as well. By having others giving feedbacks on my story, I began to see where oppression took place during those incidences I have described. For example, as Cassie commented, “Your story displays racism (bias against your language and culture), and ageism (the teacher also holding biases), [it] puts you in a position of oppression”, I began to notice oppression in the incidences. In the textbook, it explains that oppression occurs “when one group’s prejudice is backed by historical, social, and institutional power” ( DiAngelo & Sensoy, 2012, p. 39). For the incidences I shared, the forms of oppression includes racism and nationalism as I am…

In a nation built on the back of slaves, where the people of non-white colors were pronounced to be less than human, the movements attempted to bring equality to all people are far from over. In modern days, after so many battles have been fought and won in the war for equality, there is still so much inequality in the nation. As the flower of segregation was withered, the seeds of racism had been to far buried in our nation’s format. To this day, racial inequality lives in places less visible to media attention. And as long as it exists, people will seek to get rid of it anyway they can.…

It is only possible for White Americans to achieve the American dream. While America claims to be equal, racial discrimination is still present in daily life. America is working towards becoming more open and equal, but as a society, America is not as advanced as it should be. Laws have been changing throughout time but the racism and oppression has not simmered. While large scale demonstrations of racism such as bombings and hate group riots don’t occur on a daily basis, small scales race attacks such as police brutality are common.…

Racial discrimination is a big problem in America and should be eliminated everywhere. If it’s not handled it could cause a more immense problem than it already does. Racism has been around for a long time, even though there are laws that help protect citizens from different acts of it. The definition of racism means “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races”.…
