Given the steady flow of news agency reporting being focused on rapes, murders and other various types of violent crime, this creates a notion among the American public that crime is seemingly out of control. “The measurement of crime is a complex exercise, considerably complicated by the lack of internationally comparable data. The best data on crime come from standardized victim surveys, such as those conducted under the International Victims of Crime Surveys (ICVS) program. Unfortunately, only one Caribbean country—Barbados—has conducted such a survey. Other victim surveys are helpful, but suffer from a lack of international comparability, due to differences in methodology.” This would give the American public a much clearer and precise perception of crime in the country and more importantly to them, in their specific community. Also, it would allow the possibility of these policies to eventually become legislation therefore having a greater impact on the prevention of crime.
